we'll talk with eric pratt, director of communications for the gun owners of america. paul helmkey, former president of brady campaign and, indiana university professor. the supreme court took up the first major examination of gay rights in a decade. the court hearing arguments over california's proposition 8 which band same sex marriage. it is the first of two days of hearings on the subject. fox news supreme court correspondent shannon bream with our report. >> reporter: following argument today, the supreme court must now decide whether or not to uphold the wishes of california voters who, in 2008, ratified an initiative known as prop 8. it amended the california constitution to limit valid an legally recognized marriages to only those between 1 man and one woman. a number of the justices today asked why individual states shouldn't be able to make their own decisions about the relatively new concept including samuel alito who said the idea of same sex marriage is newer than cell phones and the internet. >> on the question like that, of such fundamental importance, w

suzanne pratt, "n.b.r.,' new york. >> susie: as darren mentioned, those automatic spending cuts could hit nearly 1.5 million jobs. while that could push the unemployment rate higher, many u.s. states were actually adding jobs in 2012. ruben ramirez breaks down the numbers. >> reporter: there were fewer people standing in unemployment lines in 2012 as the vast majority of states saw their jobless rates drop. in new data out today, the average unemployment rate dropped in 46 states and the district of columbia last year. it stayed the same in new hampshire and pennsylvania and was up in just two states, new york and new jersey. north dakota continues benefiting from the shale energy boom with the lowest state unemployment rate in the nation for the fourth year in a row. also making the list, nebraska and south dakota. and the states with the highest unemployment include two where the housing collapse hit full force. nevada and california. rhode island had the third highest. regionally, the west was the only area to have an unemployment rate above the national average. the northeast sits

i'm gill pratt, a program manager. one of the devices that he's creating could be used in a robot that gets rid of ieds. these robots presently are very expensive. they cost around $100,000. the ieds that they defend against cost only $10. >> personally, something that excites us a lot is prosthetic applications of this. prosthetics are exoskeleton. putting a wearable robot over the human skeleton. either to increase the strength in power and speed of the healthy-bodied person or as a prosthetic device. to help spinal cord victims or stroke victims sort of locomote with their own legs, i think it's a beautiful application. >> how this idea came about. in terms of actually creating a softer more pliable robot for christmas? i decide dodd give my niece an inflatable elephant she could ride on. we built a four-foot high inflatable element and the software tools worked and it all came together. as soon as you built that thing wow, wouldn't it be cool if it could walk. as soon as you say that to your 6-year-old niece, she b
