on the 777, on the pratt & whitney 4000, they weigh roughly 400 pounds.cular to the cord, perpendicular to the leading edge of the blade, so about this much blade was propelled backward into the engine and impacted more blades which essentially destroyed the engine. now, if you look at this engine carefully and you look at other jet engines, you'll see, brianna, there is a belt here. you see this light green coating? this is an armored belt and that keeps a broken blade from penetrating into the fuselage and killing people. so you'll see that this armor plating or this blade, this protective area, in virtually all jet engines. >> how does that happen? look, i know the fan blades are much larger on this engine that we're talking about on that 777, but how does a titanium fan blade break like that? >> brianna, these engines are flown for 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50,000 hours. typically the inspection requirements are to replace the part on condition. that means as long as it looks okay, we're going to keep on using it, okay? the problem is the system is breaking

the ntsb working along with pratt & whitney and boeing and united airlines are all looking at a couplehings in particular one, the damaged engine on the plane after it turned around and landed at denver international airport after having an uncontained engine failure they are also going to be looking at the debris that was strewn over a wide area, a suburb of denver because they have those pieces, this will allow them to quickly say, okay, what went wrong what do we think went wrong? a part is looking at the flight data recorder which is being analyzed at the ntsb offices in washington you put all of that together and what you have is an investigation that should come to some fairly quick conclusions if you will, at least initially in terms of what caused this uncontained engine failure was it fan blade fatigue was it lack of inspections being done they will be able to zero in on this relatively quickly. the reference that i would make, everybody, to follow is what happened with southwest airlines when it had an uncontained engine failure it didn't take long for them to zero in on what
