looking back from the golden gate bridge to presidio, you are more aware of the park land and less of the roads. and the viaduct will parallel the existing one and to the south and can be built while the existing one remains in operation. and the two bridges there with open space between them and your views constantly change and not aware of the traffic in the opposite direction and notice the views more. and the lanes of course are a foot wider than they are today. and they will be shoulders and if your car is disabled, you can pull off to the edge. and the next area, the tunnel portal will have a view centered on the palace of fine arts and as you come out, you can see alkatrez island and bay. and the next area is about 1,000 feet long. and when you come into one, you can see through the other end. it's almost like driving through a building than through a tunnel. and noise from the roadway will be sheltered. and the traffic will be out of view. >> when you come out of the last sort tunnel and as you look forward, you see the golden dome of the palace of fine arts and what more perf

well, they are talking sort to speak at san francisco's historic presidio this weekend. some current construction workers giving us a rare glimpse inside those walls. >> reporter: anywhere you go in san francisco's presidio, you're confronted by history. workers are digging deeper in to the past, peeling awaylayer ey layers. >> we know the original walls were from 1776. >> reporter: beneath concrete and plaster, crews exposed the building's original walls part of a $15 million project aimed at restoring one of san francisco's oldest buildings. with walls constructed of mud and other materials, it takes a specially trained crew from new mexico using old techniques for a modern retro fit. >> even though we had to purchase the bricks, everything else doing to repair it is using the traditional methods used in 1776. >> process is to put a dry pack of mud in here. >> reporter: in some ways you could say adobe expert pat taylor has always been covered by mud. >> i grew up in an adobe home. >> reporter: he trains other crafts people to restore all adobes, an ancient building te

construction near san francisco's presidio and the entrance to the golden gate bridge could bring cars to the halt. the ramp from northbound highway 1, northbound 101 will be closed beginning at 9:30 tonight. crews are working on the main bridge there. it could mean slowing and detours through night and into tomorrow morning. drivers are being asked to take lombard and avoid highway 1. but rain could push the construction back even a day. this is all part of the $1 billion plan to replace doral drive, a project expected to be hopefully completed by 2015. >>> now nearly one in seven people in santa clara county is living in poverty. every day sacred heart community service hands out groceries to some 375 families. today, though, even busier as people crowded in to find out how they can register for the annual holiday food and toy giveaway. >> like santa clara county, with so much wealth, the fact that there is so many people living, having to make a choice between a roof over their head or keeping the lights on, or having enough food for their kids or health care, it's devastating. we'r

the presidio parkway, central subway, and the transbay project it all of them are experiencing some level of impacts from the slowdown in the economy and the pace of the liver of state and federal funds. we're doing the due diligence necessary, especially sorting out the weekend provided bridge financing for these projects that the commitments that the state and federal governments have made in years past do not materialize in the timeline that was originally promised, which is a distinct possibility, especially with the issue of delays with the state bonds and so on. we have had productive meetings. i will keep you posted. we have not really changed anything as far as our commitment to those priorities. but we're simply trying to get some clarity about how the ntc will bill to help us with those issues. the authority is committed in helping to commit as much as possible. there has been considerable work in progress on the regional transportation plan. several of the have been involved in the directly, especially the ntc commissioners. i would point out that the earlier this month, a draf

others help with habitat restoration projects that land'' end, the battery and of the presidio, and at the pacific co. on the curled vincent, and they collected 2 tons of crushed cans worth $200,000 for charities. why is that even more significant? because the aircraft carrier had just returned to the first american corp., san francisco, after a seven-month deployment and an historic tour to the middle east. yet, the sailors found the time to go out and do this particular project. lastly and certainly not least, the visits to our hospitals. sailors, marines, and coast guard visited our hospitals in palo alto, san francisco, and also san francisco general hospital children's ward. having attended last year, i got the same for this year. the kids, doctors, nurses, they did not want these sailors, marines, and coast guard to leave. most importantly, it was a two- way street. all of them said the same thing. it was great to be involved with the community, to do these projects, and to come away with the great feelings they have of san francisco. if you do one good act, it has a ripple effec

the wilderness program did a hike with middle school students through the presidio. we had the first meeting in our effort to try to raise the high- school graduation rates. we piloted the first meeting along with the sergeant, it was well received. we will try to do that with other agencies to try to demonstrate the types of jobs you can get with just a high- school diploma and how much better year situation gets if you go on to get the college degree that every young person needs. we participated in the veterans day parade, monday night, and i appreciate the commissioners being there. we have reinstituted the retirement ceremony that was instituted. it was very well-received by the retiring officers. a lot of standing officers were there. i know that there are corn issues, but it is something that you can really see how important is that officers get closure to this vocation profession that we are in a verse is just turning your things and after 30 years and you are out the door. it was amazing how many people took the time to come back to participate in the 20-min
