entering san francisco at the presidio. the children were on their way to oregon. from a war ravaged country where food was scarce, many of the children suffered from malnutrition. others were sick. one child clutched a dog tucked into his sap -- satchel. none of them knew where they were going. it's not clear how many of the children brought to the u.s. as orphans had parents who hoped to join them later. but on this april 23rd flight, 45 of the children were placed with relatives in the united states. >>> in all, some 2,500 children were brought from vietnam to the u.s. in just over a month. about half of those children passed through the presidio when they first arrived in the united states. president gerald ford met the first plane when it arrived in san francisco on april 2nd. a group of children were ready to move on to southern california. >> reporter: a makeshift nursery in the maintenance shop at the presidio was for a heckic 24 hours the first home for the 58 vietnamese orphans. doctors and nurses attended to their medical needs. by mid-afternoon 34 orpha

there will be some big roll out with the presidio trust so an exciting day. let's go to the next slide. oh this is great. so don't just come to the zoo, explore the zoo. it's a great place to learn about migratory species each year and we do three or four bird walks with the master birder and he works with the -- thebon and you can learn about the san francisco zone down the coast. many of them actually stop and stay as they recognize this 100-acre park as a great place to set up shop. this is a really interesting bird. this is called a hooded orial and about the fourth year at the zoo, and the color on this bird is absolutely stunning, stunning. the picture does not do it justice. in fact we're going to have another bird walk on thursday april 23. just come and show up at 830 in our main parking lot and master birder allan ridley and some of the team will take you around and you can explore the zoo and meet some of the intriguing urban animals that use the 100-acre park in the spring. next slide. now this is -- as someone said don't put the quarter in them.

pree school over the past few years and she was adored teacher for aench family [inaudible] at the presidio. she taught there for 10 wreer jz is known to everyone and my children as teacher nancy. she was a amazing professional, teacher, as of last year i would taken the kids to school and would pick her up as shes running late down the skill. it is a devastating lost to the family and the pree schoolmunity i'm a part of for a number of years and so many san francisco communities are a part of and all that have a privilege of knowing her. she was born in syracuse new york. she was a aved hiker. started biking to work all the time. she loved traveling and museums and affluent frinch spiker and lovered spending time with our children. nancy had one son wloo lived in pittsburgh [inaudible] her son just received his phd [inaudible] services for nancy are held this sunday. she was a amazing teacher for all the parents that knew her and the families and she will be greatly missed and pray for her family and all the families that knew her in the school. it is a small community >> for the remaining
