you see pressley running away with it.ust in terms of the history, whatwhat this means, we talked about this last hour, but the lineage of this seat, kennedy, tip o'neill, another kennedy, capuano, and now the first african-american female who will ever represent massachusetts in congress. >> and steve, even on her -- the night she won here in new york, alexandria ocasio-cortez actually mentioned ayanna pressley as one of the other candidates around the country who she was rooting for, she was supporting. they are very much very similar kinds of candidates taking over similar kinds of districts that had changed demographically while a long-time serving member of the house enjoyed a rather easy incumbency. >> yeah. two women of color who had defeated long-serving white males in districts that have become majority non-white. but i also have to say quickly when you look at this, when you look at how pressley's doing there in summerville i've got to say this is a lot of -- this is not just people of color voting for ayanna pre

pressley joins a growing list of younger, more progressive democrats, many women and people of color, winning competitive primaries. miguel marquez was there, filed this report for us. >> reporter: christine, dave, just an absolute upset here in the seventh district of massachusetts. this district had been tested two times by pollster, in february and this august. in february, capuano was up by 12 points. this august, just a few weeks ago, he was up by 13 points. she got people out that don't typically vote. she's a city councilperson in boston. and even though she was part of the political establishment, even though he was a far left by american standards, a progressive, liberal democrat, she was able to best him by getting people out with the campaign slogan that change can't wait. she wanted a bolder campaign. tonight, she talked about doing this not only for women, but for african-american men behind the wall in prison, for immigrants. here's a little of how she addressed the crowd tonight when she thanked michael capuano for making her a better candidate. >> mike capuano is unapo

pressley has a unique line.power and influence of what people wanted representing their district in washington. she says those closest to the pain should be closest to the power. she is outspoken about how her father was incarcerated. she was a survivor of rape. she's very raw, very real. this was not about the new left versus the old left, van. how do you see it? >> listen, there's a wave sweeping through this party. it's about the outsiders versus the insiders. it's a generational shift. it's about women. it's about people of color. it's about people who have been called the base of this party for so long saying, we're tired of being the base. can we actually just be in the leadership sometimes? don't just have us knocking on doors. don't just have us being the foot soldiers. we want to be the generals. we want to be able to actually lead and go forward. there's very little to distinguish these candidates when it comes to policy. but when it comes to energy and when it comes to a critique of the status quo, yo
