thank, priscilla. that's nbc's priscilla thompson in houston. >>> hospitals are struggling not just on their frontlines but in their bottom lines. revenue is way down with routine visits and elective procedures postponed. so you can imagine how much worse it can be for rural hospitals. those include facilities in virginia with cases there nearing 900. they are bracing for a major surge in covid-19 patients. hospital administrators are fearing shortages in staffing, in supplies, and in cash. deepa, how prepared are these rural hospitals for what could be a surge if patients? >> that's a great question, joshua. this is a really unique problem for some of these facilities and rural hospitals here in virginia and other rural parts of the country. been speaking to folks in idaho, wyoming, the crisis they're bracing for has led to creative problem solving, you could say. i spoke with a hospital ceo in wise county, virginia. they only have about 40,000 people living in their county and of their three hospital

a moment, priscilla. we should also talk about houston's mayor and what he had to say about how the city is bracing for a possible spike in cases. let's listen to that. >> whether you're flying, driving, boating, walking, jogging, if you go outside of the state of texas, louisiana included, then when you come back to the city of houston, if you're an employee, you will self-quarantine. >> the mayor is saying something similar to what others have been saying around the country. what is the mood like in houston now? what is it like around houston right now? >> reporter: yeah. so what you heard there was the mayor talking about the advice that he is giving to his city employees. he hopes that going into the second week, the city wide shutdown, the residents of houston will follow that advice as well. folks are coming back from anywhere that they self-quarantine, the mayor was actually out this weekend evaluating some of those places that are still open to the public like the parks and the restaurants where t

and joining me now from there, priscilla thompson. welcome to you. so deep tied between the communities of houston and new orleans given their -- the ability to travel between the two and look for whatever each city has to offer. what about houston? what is it doing right now to prepare for a possibly significant outbreak? >> reporter: right. texas is only -- houston in particular only a few hours drive from louisiana and, alex, you talked about those community ties. as a remainder, back when hurricane katrina came, some moved away and there are friends and family between the states and that is a concern as we see louisiana becoming possibly a hot spot for this virus. i'm actually at butler stadium in houston. it is the only testing site in the city and i want you to take a look at sort of the cars going through today to get tested. there may be an increase today because the city has actually expanded on who can be tested. so previously it was only folks who had underlying conditions an symptoms that could be tested but now anyone who has those sympt

and that is where we find priscilla thompson. and how is the drive goef going so f so far and what brought it about? >> reporter: yeah, you mentioned houston is one of the areas in texas that was hardest hit by this virus. the county this week announced a city-wide stay at home area. so the memorial city mall are temporarily closed. but what the owners told me they decided to do is present a message of community. and so folks have been dropping off face masks and also governors and they are also donating food for the kids meals program and gift cards. so trying to get the medical supplies in that will be needed as the number of cases continues to arrive. i spoke to an e.r. physician yesterday and she said that there was enough is supplies for the immediate time but she hopes to only have to use this as a last resort. >> and we heard about the stimulus package that has been signed in to law. what is your sense of how businesses, shop owners at the mall feel crashing what that package might or perhaps might not do for them? >> repo
