priscilla thompson is with us from florida. velshi is in north carolina and steve kornacki at the big board. priscill priscilla, you're covering a push by republicans to get people out. talk about the strategy. >> a republican superpac has invested $1 million in the state of texas focussed on turning out republican voters. specifically in areas where there isn't a robust outreach effort toward these voters. we spent our sunday shadowing these folks as they were canvassing in different neighborhoods, and the pitch and the strategy there was really one focussed on local issues, local congressional races with the hopes that folks will turn out to vote on those issues, but that republicans will win up and down the ballot. and i spoke with the project manager for that group about what type of voter they were targeting, and what she hopes the impact of those outreach efforts would be. take a listen to what she said. >> this area specifically, we're trying to reach more low propensity voters. republicans who haven't always gone out to

i want to go to priscilla.llas morning news" poll also shows texas voters narrowly prefer a democratic candidate for a texas house over a republican one 50%-49% within the margin ofer error there. you've spoken to republican organizers there on the ground. you were out with democratic organizers as well today as both groups intensify their get-out-the-vote efforts. what are you hearing from those two groups? >> reporter: well, ayman, i spent yesterday with some of those republican canvassers as part of the congressional leadership fund's $1 million investment in texas looking to turn out low propensity republican voters who may not vote otherwise and today, i spent the day with the folks doing that work on the democratic side. i'm here with the texas organizing project deputy director brianna brown. talk to me a little bit about what kinds of voters that you all are trying to reach today here in texas. >> well, we're out today in harris county and every door knock is part of our 1.4 million person outreach to i

priscilla, what did you see all day? what kind of stories did you hear? >> well, brian, if the numbers are any indication of the mood here on the ground there's certainly a lot of enthusiasm here in harris county. the latest numbers we have after polls closed, more than 128,000 people in the county turned out to vote here on the first day of early voting. a new record, but also that's on par with the first day of early voting in georgia for the entire state, and that happened in one county here in texas. and, you know, we were here at 5:00 a.m. when voters began lining up hours before the polls opened. and i asked folks, you know, why are you here so early, and they told me they wanted to make sure without question that their votes were counted. and when i asked them about the issues that were going to be on their mind going into that voting booth, i heard things like health care, jobs and the economy, coronavirus, and also social justice, racial justice, wanting a candidate who will unify or a president who will unify the country. and i've got to tell yo

priscilla, thank you for joining us this morning.nding why senator harris will be heading to texas later on in the week, this 3-point lead. what are you hearing from voters on the ground there considering this polling? >> reporter: well, yasmin, voters are enthusiastic to turn out, and from the folks that i have been speaking to, you are hearing a mix of folks who are planning to support donald trump and folks who are planning to support biden. so it could be very important for these campaigns to be doing things in the state. you mentioned donald trump will not be returning, but kamala harris is going to be here campaigning. and, you know, there is a football game going on just across the parking lot from where this early voting is taking place. i had an opportunity to speak with some of those fans. most of them have already cast their ballots early, and i want you to take a listen to a sampling of that conversation. i caught up with a couple trump supporters. take a listen to what they said about why they voted for him and also the

thanks so much, priscilla.o the early voting turnout so far in texas? >> it's not really all that surprising, andrea. if you follow the trends, right, what we've seen is over the last four years since 2016 and especially since 2018, a growth spurt in terms of voter registration. so from 2016 to today, weave seen a growth of about 2 million votes, registrants here in texas. and in the last two weeks of voter registration we saw over 300,000 new voter registrations. so we know that here in texas, the electorate is growing. and that is a lot of the reason why we're seeing this increased presence at the polls. the other piece is that folks are pushing up against the obstacles that the state gop party has been trying to put in place, right? so i think it is also a reaction in terms of many voters, especially the democratic leaning ones, saying, you know what, i'm going to exercise my vote come hell or high water, i'm going to vote early, i'm going to make sure that i'm not going to be held from voting. so i think it

jill biden is hosting a get out the vote rally there now priscilla thompson in houston. priscilla, day one of early voting there and really, how's it going >> reporter: it has been a record-breaking day here, shep more than 117,000 people have cast ballots in hashs county that is a record for any period of early voting in the county's history. and as you can see, that voting is still going on. you take a look over here, you can see that drive-in voting is still under way here in this parking lot. folks are able to pull in and cast their ballot electronically and then you know, head on their way without ever having to get out of their car and you know, polls are closing in less than an hour so things are beginning to wind down here. but you mentioned that absentee ballot drop-off location this is it, right behind me. this is the one place in the county where folks are able to drop off those absentee ballots. there's been a steady stream of folks here today we're just under an hour until polls close. so it's slowed down a bit. but one of the key issues here is going to be

priscilla, where have the kids been living since separated from their parents?e children that were released from government custody before june 2018 and now are living in the united states with a sponsor. now that could be a relative on or about a family friend. i want to underscore here, jake, that these are families that have been separated for years as a result of a trump administration policy on the u.s./mexico border to separate families. and what we learned in court filing last night is that, yes, parents of 545 children cannot be located by lawyers who have been appointed by the court to identify them. hundreds of these parents are believed to have been deported making tracking them all that more difficult. we know of these children because of a watchdog report last year of finding thousands more believed to be separated than previously acknowledged. so now in these court filings we are seeing the ramification of these policies to today. lawyers are trying to find these parents and that includes phone calls, on the ground efforts. one of those groups just

joining me now from texas is e priscilla thompson. you're in el paso. is there any feeling among democratic advocates that they would want joe biden to come and campaign directly and not just his vice presidential candidate? >> i'm actually here in houston and they're working on door knocking and can advancing to turn out voters. you knocked on a number of voters doors today, what are you hearing from voters? are they going to turn out? >> we're seeing record turnout in texas. we went from 50th in the country in voter turnout to first in the nation in total voess cast and voess cast relative to 2016. a lot of those are latino voters. as you heard we have been meeting these voters making a plan to vote in texas. i'm confident because senator harris came into texas, this state could put that ticket over the top. they would like to see joe biden vn the state before election day. >> i think beto, you said you hope you will get joe biden out there. do you think that with eight days to go that will be a convincing argument. maybe democrats would have wanted?
