priscilla, there are 150 people missing just in tennessee. and i know you spoke to some of their families. what did they tell you? >> reporter: yeah, well, chris, they are growing more desperate by the day. they have been showing up with photos of their loved ones at these official press conferences, hoping for answers. and what we heard from officials today on day four of their operations is that this is no longer a search and rescue mission, is that this is now a search and recovery mission. and so, these families are looking for closure and there are also a lot of questions. we spoke to the families of two families who were missing loved ones, and they say that their loved ones were working in a factory when the floodwaters began to rise. and they have questions about why it is that officials were able to evacuate the local hospital, but were not able to make it to those folks who were working in this factory. i want to play a little bit of what one of the translators on the ground was able to translate about what these folks were saying.

"the washington post" reporting that marcie gray, the mother of the suspected gunman, tried to warn authorities, making a ten-minute call to the school at 9:50 a.m., half an hour before the gunfire erupted. gray writing in text messages to her sister, i was the one who notified the school counselor at the high school and i told them it was an extreme emergency and for them to go immediately and find my son to check on him. nbc news confirmed the call was brown's but has not seen or verified the text messages. one of the students in gray's class reportedly saw an official looking for gray moments before the shooting began. >> she thought that he was another kid with a very similar name. then about ten, 15 minutes later, that's when the one they were looking for came shooting. if they would have acted in the beginning, maybe some of the lives could have been saved today. >> reporter: in all, two students and two teachers were killed. nine others were injured.

now final stretch of the race, we start things off with cnn's priscilla alvarez has been talking to her sources inside the harris campaign. priscilla, what are you hearing about how the vice president is preparing for that debate at this point? >> well, certainly an acknowledgment that this is going to be yet another pivotal moment in what has been a compressed raise. the vice president has been familiarizing herself with the former president's record and his statements. practice sessions have also already been underway since last month, and she is approaching this fruit through a method that's used clare with as a trial lawyer now, post the democratic national convention sources told me that her place of travel is going to slow down a little bit compared to the previous weeks, so that she could hunker down and focus on debate preparations. again, recognizing that this is going to be an important moment and one where she will be toe to toe against former president donald trump. now of course, it is still a debate about the debates as they still work on those rules, particularly whether

. >> cnn's priscilla alvarez is leading us off this hour so priscilla, what are you learning about the focus? for harris and the new message for harris now well, the vice president is trying to fine tune her economic pitch. >> what you heard there from that ad is affordability and that has been the theme of her messaging on this issue, which again, as you mentioned, she pulls behind former president donald trump on now that ad is part of a broader 370 buy from labor day to election day. so they are going aggressive on the airwaves. but she's also hitting the campaign trail to also woo those working class voters and those labor groups that boosted president joe biden in 2020. now, yesterday, we saw her in pennsylvania alongside president joe biden was the first campaign event that they have done together. and of course, in a place where he only beat the former president by less than two percentage points in 2020. so clearly an important place for them to appeal to those voters. you see the images there. now, the president will be hitting the camp campaign trail to help her as he shifts

priscilla, what should we expect to hear at this campaign stop? >> well, boris, if you want any indication as to what the vice president is going to say, you only have to look at the signs behind me which say one in three women lives under a trump abortion ban. trump abortion ban being a phrase that the vice president coined during a stop in arizona earlier this year when she was warning talking about abortion restrictions in states. now of course, this is the type of rapid response travel that the vice president did multiple times over the last year and sources tell me that she was the one that directed her team to take this detour to georgia before heading to wisconsin later tonight, of course, that was the only only traveled she had until she added this in because of this devastating propublica report which has the stories of those two women, one of whom the family was in the crowd yesterday during the vice presidents event with oprah. take a listen to that moment. >> you're looking at a mother that is broken. >> amber's mom shared with me that

priscilla. what has she been saying? >> well, the vice president went through many of the same issues that she often does on the campaign trail talking about the economy and price gouging, as well as reproductive rights. but there was a moment where she went a little deeper on an issue that we don't often hear too much about. and that was on immigration reform as she was speaking to this audience of hispanic lawmakers and staff, she talked about fixing a broken immigration system, but also making the case that in doing that it's border security should also be front of mind. but then she went a step further and started to tick through some of former president donald trump's most controversial immigration policies. take a listen we all remember what they did to tear families apart and now they have pledged to carry out the largest deportation mass deportation in american history imagine what that would look like and what that would be how's that going to happen? >> massive rates president there dr
