nbc's priscilla thompson has more. priscilla, i know we're learning the names of some of the victims, the people that lost their lives in the latest mass shooting in this country. >> reporter: yeah, yasmin, we are learning the names of those eight victims. as you mentioned, people have been coming here to honor them, also coming here for prayer. there are people on hand to pray with them. there have been comfort dogs. so looking to provide support in this community as we begin to learn the names of those victims. we know one of them is 20-year-old christian lacour. his grandmother confirming he was a security guard here at the mall and is among the victims. she described him as a beautiful soul and said she is so proud of him. he had big dreams for his future and this loss has been truly unbearable for his family. we learned the name of a second victim, aishwarya thatikonda. that was confirmed by a non-profit group working with her family in india to try to get her remains sent back there. we know she was an engineer he

nbc's priscilla thompson is there in austin this morning with more. morning, priscilla. >> reporter: hallie, good morning. the now suspended attorney general, ken paxton, is hitting back calling this impeachment illegal, unethical, and profoundly unjust. and since, after house republicans voted overwhelmingly to impeach him. the vote came after hours of fiery debate with republicans who oversaw this investigation detailing a years long pattern of misconduct. now paxton led efforts to overturn the 2020 election and has been seen as a champion of conservative values, but those house republicans said that no matter how much they agree with his policy positions, no one is above the law. >> either this is going to be the beginning of the end of his criminal reign or, god help us, with the harms that will come to all texans if he is allowed to stay the top cop on the take. >> reporter: and lawmakers say paxton made threatening phone calls before that vote vowing political retribution for anyone who voted to remove him. republicans who were against this impe

nbc's priscilla thompson joining us now from austin. priscilla, bring us up to date. now? >> reporter: yes, yasmin, that hearing is entering its second hour here at the state capital. and as you can see, the line behind me to get into the gallery is still a very long. that gallery is packed with people, many of them supporters of ken paxton, but also others who are in favor of impeachment, and some folks who just happened to be on the capitol on this saturday, and decided to tune in to what was going on here. obviously, a very big day here at the capitol. right now, we are hearing republican lawmakers on the floor, essentially laying out the case against attorney general ken paxton. obviously, today, they are going to be debating these 20 articles of impeachment that allege the attorney general engaged in bribery, that he abused the public trust, he obstructed justice, just many, many allegations here that republicans, as we speak, are laying out on the house floor. and the common theme that we are hearing from them right now is that, yes, faxon has been a good conser

nbc's priscilla thompson is in austin, it was there for the impeachment. cilla, tell us what happened, and what's next in the state senate, where he has a lot of allies, including his wife. >> yeah, lindsey, well the attorney general, ken paxton, is hitting back at those republicans who voted overwhelmingly to impeach him. he tweeted, calling this impeachment illegal, unethical, and highly than just. he has said that this was a case that was based almost entirely on hearsay, and gossip. after listening to four hours of presentations, and debate, the house ultimately decided to move forward with those 20 articles of impeachment, and what we heard from the republicans who oversaw that house investigation was a detailed account of what they described as the years of misconduct. now, ken paxton has been a champion of republican and conservative values, and policies, over the years. in fact, he led the effort to overturn the 2020 election. those house republicans said that while they may support his policies, no one is above the law. i want to play a little bit

nbc's priscilla thompson joins us now from austin, texas, so, priscilla, first up, what is paxton actuallyouse and we also now have a copy of those 20 articles of impeachment that lawmakers are now reviewing and so how did we get here? attorney general ken paxton went to the texas legislature asking for $3.3 million to settle a whistle-blower complaint related to an illegal firing of four senior staffers after they had come forward to authorities alleging that the a.g. was abusing his power. they allege that he was helping a political donor who was under investigation and also facing a lawsuit and so for months now the house has been investigating whether or not the relevance of that and whether or not they should pay out that $3.3 million and what they have found according to these articles of impeachment is that they believe that the attorney general may have committed bribery, that he obstructed justice and also that he retaliated against whistle-blowers, all things that are not allowed in his office and so that is how we got here with that vote expected to take place on the house floor

joining us from texas is nbc news correspondent priscilla thompson, nbc news justice and intelligence correspondent ken dilanian with us as well and former fbi special agent clint watts. priscilla, you spoke with that survivor who says he tried to call multiple times before the shooting. what more is he sharing about how this all unfolded and how he managed to save himself and some others? >> reporter: yeah, ana, i spoke with wilson garcia, whose wife sonia and his 9-year-old son daniel died in that shooting. and he says that when they went over and asked the suspect to stop shooting his gun in the front yard, he began to threaten them and say that it was his property, he could do what he wanted, and that was when he called police and said, this man is threatening me. we know that there were five calls, he says, that were made in the time that it took for police to arrive, which he says was around 20 minutes, we know some of the calls occurred about harassment and then there may have been some calls that occurred as the shooting was going on. and i did ask the sheriff about this over

joining me now priscilla thompson in allen, texas for us. justice and intelligence correspondent, ken dilanian. it must be awful there. what else are you learning? >> reporter: it is awful and sadly at this hour, we are learning more about the youngest victims of the shooting. the wiley school district superintendent announcing that a 2nd grader, sophia mendoza is among those deceased. a 4th grader daniela mendoza, also deceased and their mother, ilda remains in critical condition. we know the names of two other victims, 20-year-old christian lacour, his grandmother confirming that he was a security guard here, and that he was fatally shot. she described him as a beautiful soul who had big dreams for his future, and also aishwarya thatikonda, an indian woman who was an engineer here, a nonprofit confirming that she was among those killed. her family now working to make sure her remains are brought back to india. and that is some of what we're learning. there are still six people, we're told, that remain in the hospital. three of them in crit

priscilla thompson has the latest from allen, texas. >> reporter: investigators have pointed us to ahere the shooter engaged online. we are seeing hundreds of posts espousing these neonazi and white supremacy rhetoric. he had purchased thousands of dollars worth of guns and ammunition. posts dating back to may of last year, a year ago showing he had been posting dozens of photos of the shopping mall, posting maps showing the entrances and exits and posts about the busiest time when there would be the most potential shoppers here. all of that very concerning. in addition to posts leading up to this horrific incident showing him speaking cryptically on social media, which could have suthssuggested he may have planning something. all of this is incredibly disturbing. it comes as we do expect the texas department of public safety alongside the fbi and allen police department to hold a press briefing later today. they have not held a briefing since the day of the shooting. it is happening as many people in this community are asking questions and demanding answers about how all of this hap

priscilla thompson has been in cleveland, texas, and has spoken with the grieving father.ave done some extraordinary reporting. the father gave you chilling details about what he says was a lengthy delay between his re911 calls and the sheriff's deputies showing up. . he said he called five typ ztimd it took 20 minutes for help to arrive. we don't know how many of those calls were about the suspect threatening him with the gun and how many came in after the shooting started happening. he did tell me he initially called because the suspect was threatening him with that gun. the sheriff did talk about this a little bit over the weekend. he said that initially the calls were about harassment and that when they began to get calls about a shooting, that's when they upped the priority of the calls and deputies rushed over. to give you a bit of context, this is a very rural area. the sheriff telling the associated press he has three deputies that monitor this whole 700 square mile area. i will tell you that the sheriff's office is about 30 minutes from this crime scene where this

joining me now is priscilla thompson in houston, texas.t do we know about the victims, the shooter and talk to me about the governor's engagement in this. >> yeah, so i want to talk fers first about the victims. there were a total of ten people in this home. five were killed. i believe we have photos of those five victims. i had an opportunity to speak with the father of the 9-year-old who lost his life and his son and he tells me his son saw his mother being shot and fall to the ground and that is when he ran to her to try to protect her and that is when the shooter shot him. that father today is just heartbroken over all of this and i asked him what his message is to the shooter and he said that he hopes he will turn himself in because he doesn't want anyone to feel the pain that he is feeling right now. but for now, that has not happened. the hunt is continuing for this 38-year-old suspect, francisco. there are more than 250 officers on the ground in cleveland, texas working to just scour that area. speaking to neighbors, searching home

priscilla thompson, thank you for your reporting.ning us is stephen spainour after his son trapped in the mall called him. i can't even imagine what it was like to witness what you saw and how traumatic that must have been. first, how are you? how is your son doing this morning? >> my son and i are both getting counseling today. i went because he called me and said he couldn't get a hold of 911. he was taking care of customers. when i drove up, i didn't expect to be the first one there. the police had not arrived. it was still an active shooter situation. i was able to get a phone from one of the bystanders who witnessed it, talked to 911 to call for assistance for medical aid and for swat. i then started trying to triage the patients. the first person i reached was a young lady crouched in the bushes and holding her head. i don't want to be too graphic. she had no pulse. i had pulled her head back to make sure she was okay and she had no face. the second victim, his eyes were fixed straight ahead. he had no pulse. the third victim,

we're also getting bone chilling new details from a conversation that our priscilla thompson had withher of a young boy who was murdered. his dad wilson garcia told her he is one of three kids that he has, a young infant child, also has a 2 1/2-year-old daughter, and the loss of his son, the child that never stopped smiling, wanted to be a police officer, and those dreams were cut short, he said that two of the women in the house that night shielded the children, said they sacrificed their lives for those little angels, and his daughter was one of the kids who was saved. we learned that. we also learned there was a confrontation building over the course of 20 minutes, in his words, that the original concern was that his neighbor was firing his rifle off in his front yard, and the infant child was crying and scared by that. he went over there with a couple of other men, if you have to do this, do it in another part of the house, you're scaring our kid. the suspect was belligerent and minutes later started loading his gun and ultimately walked over to the other side of the house and cam

. >> thank you so much, priscilla thompson.ase keep us updated on any new information you gather. frank, when you think there are zero leads, this man armed, dangerous, ready to kill perhaps given what happened, what triggered him in this moment. this manhunt has now been more than 48 hours. how concerning is that? >> when i hear law enforcement say they have zero leads, that's disturbing. it's part of a larger picture here which is that this individual seems not to really be part of the grid. we know he ditched -- reportedly ditched his cell phone. we know tracking dogs lost him because of some of the water on the ground regarding this heavily wooded area. this is a heavily wooded part of the greater houston area. we don't know if he's being helped, whether his last phone call on that cell phone was to some colleague, associate, get me out of here, i'll meet you at x location. he literally could be almost anywhere, including potentially across the border by now. it looks like all hands on deck. marbles, homeland security, stat

we're learning from a conversation between a father of a 9-year-old boy who died, daniel, and priscilla thompson, my colleague. he talked about the fact as you said, there was an infant, the father's infant who was crying and after talking with his wife, he went across the street with a couple of gentlemen, members of the extended family. if you're going to fire your weapon, do it in another direction. no, i'll do whatever i want. he went back and talked with his wife. they see him load his weapon. don't worry about, he would never shoot a woman. she stands in the front, and according to mr. garcia, he fires and shoots his wife and goes in the house, room by room and starts shooting people. he also said his son responded to seeing his mother fall and went down to try to aid her, and that's when daniel was shot. absolutely mind boggling painful details here. we are learning another developing part of the story today is that isis confirmed there have been now four occasions since 2009 where oropesa was deported from the united states and came back. twice in 2009, 2012, 2016. there was one example

my colleague, priscilla thompson spoke with the father of the 9-year-old boy who was killed and he describes a devastating scenario where the family members called 911 at least five times, waited 20 minutes for police to arrive. again, this all unfolded, and now this manhunt is under way for several days at this point. again, authorities offering $80,000 reward, but frustratingly have no leads at this point. >> charles, are you surprised here that the fbi says they have zero leads? what could have led to this? how could this suspect have gotten away with so much manpower on this? >> lindsey, it's hard to say how this could have happened at this extent given the number of law enforcement agencies that the fbi is likely coordinating with, i am surprised to hear them say they don't have leads. it was telling to me to hear the officer talk about the fact that there are a number of different leads they had that led to dead ends. it's clear to me that there have been certain things that have been turning up. from my perspective, it's very surprising that the suspect has been able to be this evasiv

mika. >> priscilla thompson, live in allen, texas, thank you so much for that report.hrough the year, according to the gun violence archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are injured or killed. in texas alone, there have been 17 this year. a reporter from the austin american statesman highlighted some of the most high profile shootings in the state. the shooting in allen, texas, brings the number of victims killed in mass shootings in the state to at least 100 during governor greg abbott's two-year term since 2015. that number does not include the shooting in cleveland, texas, last week, which saw five people killed. as the "new york times" reports, texas has some of the country's most permissive gun laws, priding itself on being a state with more than 1 million gun owners despite its recent history of mass shootings. many authorities in texas say they have seen an increase in spur-of-the-moment gunfire since 2021 when the state began to allow most adults to carry a handgun without a license. it is worth recalling this tweet
