priscilla thompson is live in new jersey with more on if it the bans are working. rking or not. the bans in new york went into effect yesterday impacting 30 sites, including all of the major airports. that follows restrictions put in place in new jersey across two dozen communities just on wednesday. now we reached out to a dozen different police departments across both states and none were able to tell us whether or not they see a definitive decrease in the number of sightings in drones in the air. the nypd did tell us this ban is a welcome measure. >> having more restricted spaces that allow fewer drones to be flying in the sky is a good thing and that should absolutely quell public concern further. >> reporter: and the nypd also told us they are not actually tracking or seeing more drones, but they are thinking more people may be looking up into the skies and seeing them and then reporting them. now, as for the bans, mo of them will remain in effect through mid-january with the possibility they could be extended. laura. >> priscilla, what about who's behind this?

for the latest on the manhunt and all around it, let's get out to nbc's priscilla thompson in new york. please tell us, priscilla, what is the investigation focusing on at this hour? >> reporter: yeah, al, good evening. two things that the investigation is focusing on. one is central park. that is where the nypd found that backpack they believe belonged to the shooter late friday and we know that there have been divers in central park continuing to scour that area, looking through the waters there and this is a very specialized dive team that is using a grid system to really meticulously look through those waters for any signs of evidence, particularly the possibility that the shooter may have dumped the gun somewhere in the waters in central park and again, that is where they found that backpack that had in it a jacket and also monopoly money. that bag has since been taken to a lab where it has been inspected for fingerprints and dna and the other big focus is the new photos released overnight by the nypd where you have a very clear picture of this person of interest's eyes. it appear

joining me now, and be sued-- priscilla thompson, thank you very much for joining us. what can you tell us about this backpack, and what lease were able to find inside? >> yeah, so several law enforcement sources tell us that while they did not find a gun inside that backpack they did find a number of other items including a jacket, it's unclear if this is the jacket the gunman was wearing when that shooting took place which we saw in those horrific videos that have been out there from that moment, and they also found monopoly money in that bag. so again unclear at this point what that might mean, but those are the items that police have in their possession. and we know that when they found this backpack they took it to a lab, they were testing it and inspecting it for fingerprints, for dna, and so while they might not have found the gun there could be other important evidence there, and we know police were back in central park today searching the area where they found that backpack, wooded areas for any additional evidence that they might be able to find and the possi

nbc news correspondent priscilla thompson has the very latest. >> reporter: this morning, new detailsble shooter of unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson four days before he was arrested. two senior law enforcement officials tell nbc news that san francisco police thought the man caught flashing a smile inside a manhattan hostile looked similar to the 26-year-old in this missing person poster and notified the fbi. one of hundreds of tips the nypd says it received in the days following the murder. mangione's mother filed a missing person's report in november, after having not spoken to her son since july, the report says. the new information comes as the fight to bring mangione back to new york intensifies. >> he should be and i will continue to say, be prosecuted here in new york city. >> reporter: manhattan district attorney alvin bragg suggesting the 26-year-old may soon drop his fight against extradition from pennsylvania to new york. >> we'll be ready whether he is going to waive extradition or whether he's going to contest extradition. >> reporter: mangione's attorney has not respo

here now with more is nbc news correspondent priscilla thompson in new york. the suspect? >> reporter: yeah, joy, here in the last hour, we have learned what could become a critical piece of information, which is how exactly the suspected gunman got to new york city, with police now saying that they're operating under the belief that he took a bus from atlanta to new york city on november 24th. sunday, november 24th. so about a week and a half ago, late night bus, and has been perhaps in the city for that long. and so as you noted, police really trying to get a fuller picture of what this suspected gunman's movements may have been in the hours and the days leading up to this brazen crime. and we know that they did search that hostel up the street on the upper west side, and they did speak to people who may have seen or spoken with the suspect, and of course, they got that crucial surveillance video, those images, the first we're seeing of this person of interest completely unmasked. so that has now been splattered across televisions throughout the day today. n

. >> nbc's priscilla thompson joins us from midtown manhattan steps away from where the killing occurredack. let's start with the photos. what do they tell us? >> reporter: we know the nypd has been working to put together a robust timeline of when the suspect got here, what exactly he did before his time and the moments leading up to and right after the crime. and i think some of what we are beginning to see is the fruit of that labor with these new images coming out. the clearest photo perhaps of this person's eyes in the back of a taxicab. a clear look at his face despite the mask and that image where he is walking, appears to be captured walking on the sidewalk. working to get these images out to the public in addition to the ones we saw that were captured at the hostel where he stayed and flashed that smile at the woman who was working there. authorities are still asking the public, that if you know this person and you have seen this person or you see this person, to contact them because as you noted, there's been no public identification of who this person is nor has this person be

nbc's priscilla thompson is outside the courthouse in pennsylvania. good morning. >> reporter: willie, good morning. right now luigi mangione is beefing up his legal team in anticipation of his likely extradition back to new york. as sources familiar with us tell us a grand jury could hand out an indictment this week. accused murderer luigi mangione has a new lawyer, high-power defense attorney karen friedman who worked in the manhattan d.a.'s office for more than seven years. >> the evidence is going to be so overwhelming that he did what he did. >> reporter: she declined nbc news' interview request but appeared on cnn earlier this week before becoming mangione's attorney laying out her thoughts about a defense strategy. >> he was brilliant his whole life. he comes from this great family. something changed, right? significantly something changed, and they are going to, i think, potentially have a not guilty by reason of insanity potential defense. >> reporter: how rare is it now for someone to try to mount an insanity defense? >> it's a huge risk bec

priscilla thompson is reporting from new york city as well. what more do we know about this? >> reporter: yeah, well, we see that video of thompson walking on the sidewalk just behind me. he's walking alone. he does not appear to have security with him. we have also been combing shareholder records which show no indication of him having security, which is pretty rare for a major ceo, particularly one who is attending a publicly advertised event like this shareholders conference. so there are a lot of questions around that and why exactly he did not appear to have security with him. you add to that the fact that his wife tells nbc news that he had received threats, that he told her he had been receiving threats, and so she said to us that there may have been a lack of coverage there. so certainly, a lot of questions about whether security was offered to him, and perhaps he declined that coverage or whether there was never security that was offered to him, and that is going to come up as police are continuing to investigate, but it's also going to come up in terms of liability p

nbc's priscilla thompson joins us now from midtown manhattan, just steps away from the scene of the crime you for being with us. investigators are now putting together what they think is a timeline of events. can you take us through what it is that we know so far? >> reporter: yeah, charles. very robust timeline of events. so investigators do believe that this suspect was on a bus that originated in atlanta, georgia, and made its way up to new york city with several stops along the way. he arrived at port authority on november 24th, so ten days before this crime occurred. and they also say that they caught him on video just a little over an hour after he arrived, that he came to the hilton hotel where we are where this crime occurred. we also know that he was staying at that hostel on the upper west side. they were able to get photos of his face, the only photos that we have because apparently according to witnesses he wore his mask most of the time when he was in new york city but when he was talking to a woman at the front desk at that hostel, he may have flirt and flashed that smile. w

joining me now, is priscilla thompson, who has been following the story.s? >> the latest things we are hearing about is how exactly this suspect may have gotten into new york city. this idea that he took a greyhound bus from atlanta to new york on sunday, november the 24th, so a week and a half that he may have been in the city, thinking about this, planning this, scoping things out, we don't know, but what we know is clear is that the nypd is finding the surveillance video and. beginning to piece together the hours and days leading up to this. nbc new york getting that surveillance video of the suspect on that e-bike on west 85th street when he was fleeing into central park, which was the last known place that police know he was before we now no longer know his whereabouts, at least not publicly. and of course, the big video today, that surveillance video from the hostel, where you actually see the full face, unmasked, and that has been out there today across the tv screens and the newspapers, so they are interviewing witnesses, people who may have spoken

priscilla thompson is reporting from new york city. here in studio, tom winter. what do we know about the bullet casings, tom? >> one of the things we have to keep if mind, we've got these words written on there. does it speak to a motive? a message this suspect is trying to send, but it can also be a diversion, too. you have to consider those things as well. does it have a broader meaning? i think it's important as soon as i say that to say the nypd thinks this is a targeted attack from everything that police have said that they've uncovered. is there any indication he's going after any other individuals? no, but i think when you look at the totality of this investigation at this point, it's clear this person was on a particular mission and that they were definitely going after this person. what type of message they were trying to send, why they were doing that, what they were up to leading up to it is something that obviously nypd and the detective bureau is going over right now. one of the things they've uncovered, the images we're looking at on screen. this c

joining me now with more on all this is priscilla thompson from pennsylvania. priscilla, welcome.e move to higher agnifilo and how likely is mangione to return to new york soon? >> reporter: yeah, alex, so, agnifilo had previously worked in the manhattan district attorney's office for seven years as the chief district attorney, so she knows the office that is prosecuting this case very well. she has worked in the new york criminal justice system for decades, so she knows all of that very well. and while she has declined nbc's interview request, she was on cnn earlier this week before being hired and she talked about the sheer amount of evidence against her now client, but she also laid out a possible defense strategy, take a listen. >> he was brilliant in his whole life, he comes from this great family, something changed, right? significantly, something changed. and they are going to, i think, potentially have a not guilty by reason of insanity, potential defense. it looks to me like there might be a not guilty by reason of insanity defense that they are going to be thinking about

joining his abc news correspondent priscilla thompson who has been following the story. what are the latest developments? >> the latest thing we are hearing about is how exactly the suspect may have gotten into new york city. the idea he took a greyhound bus from atlanta to new york on sunday, november 24. a week and a half he may have been in the city, thinking and planning of this and scoping things out. we don't know but what's clear is nypd is finding surveillance video and piecing together a picture of the hours and potentially days leading up to this. nbc new york getting surveillance video of the suspect on the e bike on west 85th street when he was fleeing into central park which is the last known place police know he was before we no longer know his whereabouts, at least not publicly. the big video, the surveillance video from the hospital where you see the full face unmasked. that's been out there across the tv screens and newspapers. they are interviewing witnesses. people who may have spoken or seen him to try to piece together where he was and anything we ca

nbc's priscilla thompson is in hollidaysburg this sunday night , priscilla, welcome.ng us up to speed. defense attorney, a possible indictment, and potential extradition. >> yeah, alice, i will start with the new details. we are now learning that while the nypd said they did not i.d. luigi mangione until after he was arrested, we now know that authorities actually contacted his mother the night before he was taken into custody, and that she told them the photos of the suspected gunmen could in fact be her son. identifying luigi mangione as the possible shooter of united healthcare ceo brian thompson four days before he was arrested. four law enforcement officials tell nbc news that san francisco police caught the man flashing his file in the manhattan hospital looks similar to the 26-year-old in this missing persons poster, and notified the fbi. one of hundreds of tips the nypd says it received in the days following the murder. mangione's mother filed a missing persons report in november after not speaking to her son since july, the report says. the new information co

joining me now from new york, near the crime scene, priscilla thompson. thank you for being here.n this investigation? >> yeah. the fbi is taking a more public role announcing overnight a $50,000 reward in addition to the $10,000 the nypd is offering for any information that would lead to the arrest of this individual, and it comes, as you mentioned, after the nypd found a potentially crucial piece of evidence. that backpack they believe may belong to the shooter. as for now, the suspect and who he is remains unknown. and where he is remains unknown. >> an urgent manhunt growing wider. >> we have reason to believe that the person in question has left new york city. >> reporter: the nypd police commissioner saying that this man, a person of interest in killing brian thompson, may have left the city. it come after an extensive video canvas that shows the suspect leaving the hilton hotel after the shooting. getting on a bike and riding into central park. then riding out of the park at 77th street before he is seen walking on 86th. >> from there we have him in a taxicab and it takes h

joining me now is priscilla thompson.ain at all concerned about the drones. they seem to be very few detailed answers. >> yeah, alex. it is still too soon to see if these bans are working. one in new york went to affect yesterday, including all the major airports. it follows a similar measure that went into effect on wednesday in new jersey, covering about two dozen communities. we reached out to about a dozen police departments across both of those states and we weren't able to get a definitive answer on if there has been a decline in the number of sightings, but the nypd did say they welcome this measure. listen. >> this is the kind of measure we have been looking for some time, as we have seen more and more drones and commercial drones and hobby drones being seen around the city. having more restricted spaces that allow fewer drones to be flying in the sky is a good thing. that should absolutely quell public concern even further. >> the nypd says they have seen a steady uptick of drones over the years, but they are not

. >> joining us now from not too far away is priscilla thompson who has been keeping up with the latest on the story. are there any indications police are getting closer to actually finding the suspect? >> reporter: christina, in the last hour, our affiliate wnbc was in central park where they say there are scuba teams searching in water near where the backpack was found. they are working incredibly hard to try to collect as much evidence as they can to continue this investigation. we also know that mayor adams has said that they have a lot of evidence that's not yet been released publicly, but that they are keeping close to the chest as they work to try to track this guy down. the newest piece being the images we saw them release overnight, perhaps the clearest picture where despite having a mask on, you can see this individual's eyes very clearly in the back of the taxi. we know the nypd developed an extensive time line. they believe after the shooting, this person of interest got into a taxi and made his way to port authority where the trail goes cold. tom winter spoke with a former

. >> nbc's priscilla thompson, thank you for that report. >>> and joining us now, cedric alexander, senior analysts. thank you for being here. as we were just discussing, the nypd scuba team is search it's the waters in central park for evidence near where the backpack was found looking for evidence including the gun. how difficult is it to conduct this type of search? >> well, any kind of water search is certainly going to present its challenges. and of course, there is also some danger involved in that. but they have skilled, trained, certified divers that are going to go into that water as a team. and they're going to do a very extensive search of where they believe evidence may be found. but, their experts at that. but it is a daunting task. it is not an easy task. and it certainly does take some time, as well, too, jonathan. >> mayor eric adams said yesterday, that the net is tightening around the suspect. along with the new photos, authorities found what they believe to be suspect's backpack in central park. there was no gun inside. but it did contain a jacket and fake monopoly money

joining us now, nbc's priscilla thompson outside the courthouse in pennsylvania. here in new york city, mangione is set to appear later today. also with us, charles coren, a prosecutor. what came out of these two hearings this morning? >> reporter: yeah, jose. the top line is charlie a a waived extradition and shortly after that happened, he was loaded into an suv by the nypd now in their custody and taken to the airport where we saw him in an orange jumpsuit getting onto that plane and he is now over the skies making his way to new york city. but, today, we saw him in court for about an hour and a half. each of those hearings lasting less than five minutes. the first of those hearings was related to the state charges in pennsylvania. forgery and i.d.s. they had a preliminary hearing about. signing papers in handcuffs. we know he was very attentive inside the card home. card home we did have a sketch artist and that is what you are seeing there. also a producer saying that he looks attentive at one point. even smiling as he was sitting next to his attorney, thomas

i want to bring in priscilla thompson who has been reporting on this. tom winter joins us with jim cavanaugh, an msnbc terrorism analyst. tom, take us plus the big break so far. it seems to be the image, his face from the hostile where nbc news learned the so-called person of interest took down his mask to perhaps flirt or have a conversation with a woman behind the desk. what more do we know about the clues investigators are chasing? >> that's right, andrea. that is correct, that is our understanding he took the mask down momentarily in the one you're probably just about to see, there it is, him smiling and looking at an individual. yes, definitely a huge clue in this case, because what they were able to do is take that photo and they were able to do the type of forensic and computer work that the nypd is capable of doing to track him to that location just outside the port authority where he got off of that bus from atlanta. so that was really important, because it establishes when he came into the city, and it establishes a bit more of the timeline. n

nbc's priscilla thompson has the latest. tonight, the fight to extradite luigi mangione to new york, intensifying, with a source familiar telling nbc news that this week a grand jury could be asked to hand up an indictment against the man accused of murdering unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson. we expect that to be sued any day now, and it's the second that happens. i'm issuing a warrant for extradition as a completely out of touch. the possible indictment, intended to strengthen the manhattan district attorney's case for extradition by making the charges official, as questions remain about whether mangione will go willingly or fight it. we're going to continue to press forward on parallel paths, and we'll be ready. in a pennsylvania court this week, mangione's attorney vowed to challenge extradition. but in the days since high powered new york defense attorney karen friedman, agnifilo has joined the team and declined to comment on the matter. the pennsylvania department of corrections says a team of new york attorneys visi

joining us now, priscilla thompson from pennsylvania near the prison where he's been held.efense attorney danny receivales. what is the latest this morning. >> reporter: well, as you noted, mangione now has a higher defense on his side in karen freedman. she's someone who worked in the manhattan district attorney's office for more than seven years as the chief assistant district attorney so she knows the office that is prosecuted this case very well and spent decades working in the criminal justice system in north ew york and com with a lot of experience as this indictment could be imminent. we know that last week his attorney was in the courtroom just behind me saying that they were going to fight extradition. they would they would fight this and we know she did visit him on from i to meet and talk to her client. and we know that he has had no other visitors and her partner and her attorney and it does appear his family has had an opportunity to see him. but of course, we also heard from the manhattan district attorney alvin bragg on friday, when all of the visits occurred
