this is procter & gamble, for heaven's sake. when i listened to the fourth quarter conference call a few weeks ago and we got to that q&a session, it was like an open rebellion among the analyst. many followed this company for decades. it was heresy. clearly this is not the best of breed that we remember. it's not the proctor of old. proctor has become a troubled company. so what are the problems? how many are company-specific versus industry-wide and will the plan proctor announced on thursday be enough to fix them? man, i don't know. where do we even start here? proctor's markets aren't growing much. the company's operating margins are in decline because developed markets aren't contributing to proctor's growth or earnings. only emerging markets are driving growth right now. that's also why they're doing these massive cost cuts, slashing $3 billion of overhead costs, $6 billion in goods sold and lopping a billion off the marketing budget to boot. good first step. i think it's a good first step for proctor. but it's not enough.

procter and gamble, people are liking it and they announced the colossal restructuring and they neededlagged terribly and pepsi underspent against coke and lost share despite terrific innovation and struggles to stay one step ahead of the posse. proctor which grows earnings at a 9% clip long term 16 times earnings and clark has a 10% long-term growth. general mills which missed numbers in 8% growth gets awarded a 15% multiple. pepsi gives a 15.5% multiple. look, it would be one thing if the consumer goods things had vastly superior dividends and they're slightly higher from microsoft. i have long praised consumer goods on this show as a terrific their money long term. place for investors to park their money long term. give me the sleep at night factor and they're paying up for those earnings, but i no longer believe the stocks are worthy of that preview. in fact, i wonder if they can go the way of the big pharma stocks. stocks like merck and pfizer, both 3.8% long-term growth rates and now their multiples have shrunk in the high single digits and many stocks in the group have no growth

actually procter & gamble is the one that got my interest recently. last week they had unusual upside call buying. yesterday was the weekly options buying the 65 strike calls. those expire tomorrow. they were buying them yesterday for 15 cents. they've nearly doubled today. so when i'm looking around you always want to find something that might be a derivative play off of this if you're not seeing anything directly in kellogg's. and certainly pg yesterday caught my attention. >> let's playoff on to pops and drops the midday pocket movers that might not be on your radar. u.s. steel popping 1%. >> what really led us this morning when we were down and started moving to the upside was names like u.s. steel, cliffs, all those names in the risk on space. i still like this a lot. >> esrx popping 2%. >> express groups has some disputes going on of course with walgreens but they say they're opening to negotiations. that seems to be what's at least partly behind the 1% move today. >> first solar dropping 6%. >> wow, once a market darling now on its way to being

in our headlines, kellogg is acquiring procter & gamble's pringle's business for $2.7 billion.r on that news. remember this is a little bit of a saga here, the bid and the ask, 57.55. p&g had previously agreed to sell the business to diamond foods, diamond says no break-up oregon other fees will be paid in connection with the termination. >>> nbc universal parent company, comcast reporting results this morning, the company earning 47 cents a share, for the fourth quarter, that was six cents above estimates. revenues beat consensus, comcast is increasing annual dividend to 65 cents a share from 45 cents a share and it's also approved a new $6.5 billion share repurchase plan. shares are getting more expensive this morning. we spoke to comcast ceo brian roberts in the last half hour. >> we had a great quarter on xfinity products, high-speed internet, had a fabulous quarter. better than 2010 by over 10%. this is a product that's been out there for many years, to still be growing faster than the year before, it's the sixth straight year we've added over a million broadband customers
