what's your reaction to these reports that objects or projectiles are hitting trains? a train? >> this seems to be if all this is correct, it seems to be a piece of the puzzle we have been missing. we have an engineer that people reported as conscientious, wasn't on a cell phone, wasn't on drugs, no indication he was sleepy. somehow we know he had to put the train into that speed. trains don't run away like in the old-fashioned movies. he had to move the tloten intohrottle into that speed and he had to have his foot on the dead-man switch. and then he threw the emergency brake. what we can't figure out is what distracted him. the good news about this is that the fbi and their forensics labs i have seen this kind of thing where we have bird strikes, bullet strikes, all sorts of things on transportation. and they'll be able to tell from the crazing marks. how the glass is crazed or chipped or broken. what hit it. and generally what hit it. is it a bullet is it a rock is it a bird? i don't think it's a bird. i think it's probably a bullet. i don't know. >> you think it's

the question is was it hit by a projectile before it derailed? >> reporter: the mystery of finding what happened to amtrak 188 continues. they tell cnn they have been unable to corroborate the assistant conductor's accounts that she heard them tell the engineer about a septa train that had been hit by an unknown projectile. nevertheless authorities are still looking into the possibility. >> at this point we really want to chase this lead down. we heard from the assistant conductor that that's what she believed she heard, there was some conversation about that and we now see a mark on the windshield that we want to look at. so we're going to look at everything at this point. >> reporter: on monday forensic experts are expected to examine the fist-size circular marking on the left-hand side of the windshield. they think the marking may have been there before the crash. meanwhile, the ntsb now says there is evidence from the train's data recorder to suggest bass baston manually throttled the train. the question is why. >> let's bring in a member of

so how could a projectile have led to this.othesis still holds true i think that if somebody threw a projectile, other train engineers have said this, if something big and heavy hits the windshield just the noise just the shock and surprise alone can disorient the train engineer. now, this is a train coming out of the north philadelphia station. it's about a three-mile stretch to get to the curve where the accident happened. and when 188 came north out of that station the routine practice is for him to open up the throttle to get right up to about 80 miles an hour and then when you get to the curve that's when you have to put the brakes on to slow down for the curve. so in other words, the throttle would have been wide open. then if the engineer got disoriented from the impact of a projectile, he could have forgot to put the brakes on for the curve. >> oh yeah. we'll think about it. i don't know if you've driven in a car as i have where something hit the windshield. it's incredibly startling and that was a little pebble and the

this investigation is looking into the possibility that the train had been struck by some sort of projectile. so richard, you've worked on crash reconstructions, what is the possible link between something hitting a windshield and the train accelerating as rapidly as it did? >> well the correlation is the fact that he was accelerating he would have had his throttle wide open trying to get up to track speed. had there been some sort of an event like something hitting his windshield and he would not know exactly what hit his windshield all he knows is he's traveling along and boom something large hits. he doesn't know whether it's a gunshot, something large being thrown something being kicked up from the track. he just doesn't know. so he may have done something like dive to the floor, or you know jumped out of the way, just not knowing what it was. and at that point, the throttle is still wide open and accelerating the train. and if he possibly got an injury from whatever came through the windshield or caused the a chunk of the windshield to hit him. may be the reason why he doesn't know or r
