so cnn's polo sandoval is in provincetown for us. tell us what you're seeing in the town and how they're reacting. >> reporter: alisyn, that's key now because now what we know based on this new data release is that the outbreak that was certainly seen here and still to a certain degree, to a lesser degree, being felt here, was part of that evidence that was considered by the cdc when it told the rest of the country that it would be wise to put those masks back on, regardless of vaccination status and that's what we're seeing largely here, folks inside adhering to this new mask mandate that requires people wear those masks while in indoor public spaces here in provincetown but when it comes to the actual numbers, let's break them down for you. this is a sampling that the cdc considered as it revisited that mask guidance and found that 469 massachusetts residents were infected during this fourth of july outbreak. that's generally in barnstable county, and that includes here in provincetown, 74% of those, and this is what is concerning,

this new data zeros in on this outbreak in provincetown, massachusetts. still got sick. they had traces of the delta variant. was that data, along with what we already know about community spread, enough justification for the cdc to change its mask guidance this week? >> well, jake, i think the short answer is yes. the cdc has a long tradition of investigating outbreaks. of other communicable diseases. and often those outbreak investigations by the disease detectives illuminate how a variety of infectious agents are transmitted. this is a very instructive outbreak investigation. as said, this is a much more transmissible virus, and to everyone's surprise including my own, people who are vaccinated can have as much virus in their throat as unvaccinated people. and therefore the potential for spread is there. the two lessons, if you're not vaccinated, get vaccinated. that keeps you out of the hospital. if you're vaccinated or unvaccinated when you get together with other people, put that mask right back on. it's really important. >> a study in china found that patients wit

and antonia, there is a disturbing trend of unvaccinated people there in provincetown. tell us about it. >> yeah, geoff. that is right. look, they have a outbreak of 256 confirmed covid cases, and of that number, according to the town manager here in provincetown, 70% are people who are fully vaccinated. they went out and got their shots. so for many of the people who own the businesses here, and live here year-round, this is a major cause of concern, because many of the folks went out and got their vaccines is, thinking that it made them nearly invincible, and realizing that in a tourist town in a very popular tourist town like p-town where people come from all over the country unvaccinated, they are still at risk. to put some of it in perspective, massachusetts is one of the most vaccinated states in the country, and cape cod, this area is the most vaccinated areas in the country. they tied it to fourth of july celebrations when many unvaccinated people came here to go to venues and parties with unvaccinated residents and people, and that is why they are seeing the sp
