and ptsd in my opinion, i'm being treated for ptsd. it has to be part of the orientation in the army, in combat troops even before they are deployed because you will get ptsd in combat because it's trauma. and trauma is happening when you are deployed. it's not like a big, big question. there's no question about it. you are going to be traumatized. start it at orientation, through deployment, through combat, and back as one seamless task. instead of you have to come and figure out five years later when you don't have no wife, no kids, you destroyed your job, that there might be something wrong. see what i'm trying to say? half the stuff in the beginning, middle, and bring the troops ready to go into treatment. not after. there's that whole big gap afterwards. we have to do outreach. we know this. no. you start as soon as you walk into the thing and raise your hand, you know you are going to be traumatized on the battlefield. right then and there guarantee you right there, service from the day you raise your hand and say i do to the day

post-traumatic stress disorder, particularly those who have combat, and we need to recognize that that ptsd, in addition to the alcohol and drugs, also affects not only the individual but that individual's family. so, as a society, we have an obligation to our men and women who served to make sure that we're addressing the full range of issues associated with their homelessness, or their alcohol and drug use, or their post-traumatic stress disorder. and the family members who've supported the individual who served who may be affected by that sort of dislocation may need special services dealing with that. so when we're talking about services, we're talking about that full range of things. one of the, i think, fortunate things is the amount of growth in the federal investment in programs that serve the homeless veterans. and of those, i think the most important development is the, the expansion of permanent supportive housing options for people who are veterans and who are homeless, and the veterans' affairs supportive housing program is one of, i think, the most promising models that have a

amazing things that not -- and not all of it is good, especially when it comes to the unseen injuries of ptsd and reintegration. this is my observation. what i have seen is that the cookie cutter approach does not necessarily work in the continuing care of these troops, nor does it work with the continuing care of vets and their families back into the civilian community. the defense forum asked me to give you a story. one example that walks us through the reintegration process and covers where things stand, and many of the issues that we will be discussing today, so for your background, i was embedded in afghanistan during a huge operation in helmand province. it involves special forces and the 82nd airborne parachute infantry regiment. the helicopter that i was supposed to be on was shot down by the taliban. it killed everyone on board. a lot of that classified information from that operation made news recently onwikileaks.
