i rise today during national ptsd awareness month to call attention to this topic that's so important to the lives of our veterans and their families. mr. hill: nowhere is the connection between ptsd and suicide felt more strongly than in the veteran community. suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the united states and on average we lose 20 veterans per day to suicide. far too many of our veterans are left with the difficulties of overcoming ptsd and addiction on their own. our central arkansas veterans health care system led by dr. margie scott is one of nine systems nationwide that's currently involved in the clay hunt act program in our nation. this program gives our v.a. employees the necessary tools to reach out to high-risk veterans and offer guidance while providing essential suicide prevention services. i've got three wounded warriors on my district staff, mr. speaker, and we're together dedicated to our veterans. i'm grateful to our veteran service organization that is we work together to spread the word on how we need to help our veterans avoid the crisis that comes

ptsd, of course, is a big thing. i think that my experience has been that all wars predict those types of things. we are just more aware of it now and fortunately are doing more about it now. but some of the stories that you will air are about soldiers that were severely injured in vietnam and have to live with that or had ptsd from, for example, being a helicopter mechanic. you think how did than? somebody had to clean up the helicopter when they came back. you are in a relatively safe place and the war comes flying in and you have to deal with it and then go back to normal and it's more bizarre, not to get back to the enemy in any way. it's a different kind of challenge, i think. >> again, these are combat veterans on the front lines, not necessarily generals or admirals. >> that's right. we interviewed many of both. world war ii, typically because of their age they were privates. they really didn't know where they were. the foxhole view was 18 feet around them. it was amazing to interview people in the same battle
