more and more girls are hitting puberty way too soon.f untreated, early puberty can cause the risk of behavioral or psychological issues. we show how the condition is affecting one california family. >> it was very alarming. she's a little kid. >> lauren christian is talking about her daughter who wants to be called cindy for this story. cindy is like any other nine-year-old in most ways. she likes to play video games and hang out with friends. unlike many girls in her age, she already started to hit puberty. >> wait a minute, we didn't even get a chance to be a child practically. this baby hasn't been a baby for very long. >> the change started during kindergarten. at around 5 years old, cindy started getting body hair. she developed breasts and she had a growth spurt. cindy noticed the difference between her and other kids. >> i'm taller than most girls because of the problem. >> laura brought her daughter to specialists for bone and blood tests to prove she was maurl at a very fast rate. >> nowadays we've seen the girls start earlier

and then as i started to get older and about to head into puberty, things started to get difficult. expectations of how a young lady should act started to creep in and then of course i hit puberty and my body just started to transform in a way that was exactly the opposite of what i wanted it to do. >> were you mature enough to understand that this transformation wasn't right for you? or did you just feel odd? >> it felt like it wasn't right for me, but at that point i didn't know about, you know, being transgender. i didn't know people could transition. i had no idea. i just knew something felt incredibly wrong and what was happening to me, particularly -- i was very aware of my breasts and that they just felt wrong on my body and that i always tried to de-emphasize in every way. wear baggy shirts and really try to de-emphasize them in every way i could. >> at the same time you're going through this extraordinary experience and the feelings that you're having your mother, of course, is one of the world's most famous sex symbols, the embodiment of female beauty. >> right. >> did tha

i feel there's puberty when you become a woman and the world looks at you very differently, and then as you age, you begin to become more invisible to the world, and in a sense a lot freer, so i think actually as i've gotten older, my 40s i felt more of a woman than i think i was when i was younger. there's just a sense of freedom that i feel now that i didn't have earlier, and i don't know that's a very hard question, and i feel like sometimes that's something you inherit from your mother, but i feel like that was never really explained to me. i grew up with brothers. i've always had best friends, but it was never clear to me how i was supposed to become a woman, and i'm not sure i'm doing it in the right way, but i'm doing it in my way.
