artillery officers become civil affairs, public affairs, kind of handing out pamphlets trying to to interact with the local population. i didn't want to do that. i would do something i was more meaningful. it doesn't have an intelligence officer. we decided we're going to create my forward observer team into intelligence section. as you go to the book it paid off. it made huge difference. it's kind of the peas that you think about police work and counterinsurgency. it is about police work. but for police, for every four police officers you have to detected. within the military you don't have that. you have nine guys per 800. that creates a problem for the dissemination of information and things of that nature. enough about myself and my background. the city of ramadi. ramadi is the capital of anbar province, about 400,000 people. is a very urban environment, very condensed. most of the houses are small forces. they have a court yard wall. it's an interesting dynamic. you'll see from the onset there is a marine who shot. but just getting that going back to the combat outpost which they had mo

typically what happens is artillery officers become civil affairs, public affairs, kind of handing out pamphlets, interacting with the local population. i didn't really want to do that. i wanted to do something more meaningful, and so infantry company level doesn't have an intelligence officer, and so an infantry company is about 200 marines. for 200 marines, there is nobody that is designated to handle intelligence. that occurs at the battalion level of 800 marines. we decided that we were going to create my little ford observer team into an intelligence section. as you go through the book, that really paid off. it made a huge difference. it's the piece that, you know, you think about police work and counterinsurgency and guerrilla warfare, but for every four police officers, there's two detectives. you sift through the information. within the military, you don't have that. there's 9 guys for 800. that creates a problem for the december seminated nation of information and things of that nature. enough about myself and my background. the city of ramadi. it's a city in anbar province. i

office n the state department in the public affairs office and i have so much pride, whether i defsh it or not in following his career and he was sitting where you are. he did this seminar when he was a student and just remember, you can go from this seminar right back to help us in many different ways. our speaker here is the assistant secretary of state for public affairs and he is the guy who greets every day at the state department. he's the guy you see on the newscasts from time to time being put on the hot seat by reporters and handeling himself very well, just thank you. before going to the state department he was the senior fellow and director of homeland security at the center for american progress and while there he authored very important papers on subjects involving a national security. issues such as how we keep bombs off airplanes and how we protect our country while all these terrorist threats are out there somewhere and he's a frequent guest speaker on all of the network news programs. he's done both olbermann and o'reil o'reilly. if you can handle that you can handle
