for public outreach, the project sponsor has a long history of collaboration with many nonprofit organizations and with san francisco unified school district. a preapplication meeting was held with the community on september 4, 2018, and an additional community meeting was held on february 5, 2019. in addition, c.m.c. reached out to various organizations in the neighborhood directly to discuss the project, including calle 24 latino cultural development, housing rights committee and mission neighborhood centers. c.m.c. was able to work closely with representatives of u.s.m. to identify specific ways of maximizing project benefits to the community and sign the m.o.u. august 28, 2019. to date, the project sponsor has submitted letters of support from mission neighborhood centers, san francisco unified school district, mission delores neighborhood associations, and approximately 360 support letters from students and families. in addition, the department recommends approval with conditions as the project is on balance consistent with the mission area plan and consistent with the policies of the gen

relating to budget planning, strategic planning, clean air transportation, climate and energy public outreach and education, environmental justice, habitat restoration, green building, zero waste, toxics reduction and urban forestry. the speaker is deborah raphael. explanatory document is the director's report. this item is for discussion. >> the next item. >> i would just say i want to -- there's so much we could talk about but we have a lot of new staff here who i'm going to have them introduced in a minute. i want to talk about a couple things that are going on that are really meaningful for us. in order for us to get to a climate action strategy that is compliant with the paris climate accords, we need to have a deep and extensive community engagement process. and in addition to that, for our mayor to feel comfortable and excited about doing some of the bold policy initiatives we need, she has said to us you need to bring others along. and so we are hearing -- and we also believe that in our hearts as well. and so we are embarking on some interesting methods for engaging community on what

we need to do a lot of public outreach to hear what folks have to say about that. but we've gotten some initial positive feedback in particular from supervisor's office. and one of the benefits that he's been talking about with his stakeholders is a more reliable j. >> right. >> so if we could reinvest some of the service that we are now spending delayed at the portal and delayed at getting into the subway and run a more frequent and more reliable service then the impact of having to transfer becomes less. we also think that that work is linked to the west portal crossover because part of asking folks to transfer is that you need to make sure they have space in a vehicle. so having a three-car frequent shuttle in the subway we think is key to that too. so it's very preliminary. we need to have more community discussions. we -- we think it has the potential to not only improve service for our j line customers but to address the subway congestion address delays on the n line as it goes into the subway. so we will be asking some folks potentially to transfer that are

presidency through teaching, research, public outreach events and also through its collective memory project which is an oral history run by staff on the center who film and record archives of people who have been in various administrations as well as local officials who work closely with those administrations. the center also runs a very robust postdoctoral fellowship program. it's been in effect for an five years and it's rapidly become probably the most influential and famous fellowship program of its kind. each who completes the term has published a book or contracted a book at a major university press such as harvard, cornell, and they all get jobs and that's a good thing. we're very proud of them. the center for presidential history complements the work we do. in addition to the work they do in their own teaching and research, they complement the department of history as well as the center for southwest studies. you'll be pleased to note, because i know there are a lot of history buffs here we're bucking the national trend at smu and getting more and more students studying hist
