we have under 2400 staff at the puc. by racial breakdown, 32 percent of our staff, 32 and a half percent of the staff are asian and i included in that number, the filipino staff as well. black staff comprise 8.6 percent of the staff, hispanic and latino, 13 percent. multiracial 2.1. white staff, 42.7 and indigenous staff at .6, so under 1 percent. the reason i want to share this, the context of the demographic information as you hear about the progress and things we have been doing. first for most, we issued in early 2023 a racial equity survey designed to capture the client of the organization squl assess where we were around racial equity diversity inclusion. based on the progress the past 4 years in regards to the commitment the agency made advancing racial equity and inclusion and diversity we wanted to understand how far we were moving. what we identified as a result of the racial equity survey were three significant findings. one that the key take aways included retention and promotion was the highest rank staff co

so we've adapted our program there, i have been i worked for eight years at the puc.was the security director. i'm very familiar with the systems, and i think that we are very lucky that there has been an enormous amount of resources put into hardening our systems from the water system and, and the sewer system. but the fact of the matter is that, the, the nature of no pun intended, of the, of the, the severity of the storms that we're likely to see. and just look at florida, what's happening right now, are going to be beyond what the systems can handle. so on our part, we are the response. we are the ones that deal with the impact of those things. and i think that, we have a very robust system. this is why the eoc is so important. this is why our coordination and collaboration with all the different departments is critical, and, and, and we need what i would like to do to, to get to your question about what else we can do is i'd really like to leverage that the data, the stories to show and work more with department of environment and our other partners, more, collab

it was built in the 50s and 60s and it is old and a lot of these utilities go to the puc's other rate base. one thing we discussed previously was to have this be part of a infrastructure project, a national infrastructure project that we take on as a nation to have a reliable grid through, for example, investment tax credits for building up the grid. we do not have that. that is one reason why prices are going up. the president and the administration is obsessed about lowering prices. that is why the focus has been on what can we do, in the scheme of things lower the cost. we saw lowering prices take place before this a ministration took office and they were going down significantly. >> you cannot compare anything that happens today with what happened four years ago because we were in the middle of a pandemic and everything dropped through the floor. legitimate comparison is before that. no doubt, before that there was still investment in grid, not as much as is necessary. we need a bigger investment in our national grid and we need to have it paid for. >> that is where promoting the

time capital expenses, most of which you will have heard about back in may from the airport and the puc and then other growth, largely in non-general fund departments. contrast with that. the change that with the change in general, fund spending from the current year to next year, and you can see the general fund only grew by 0.4. and it is almost entirely in employee salary and benefits, whereas we've had to make trade offs in other areas of the budget in order to balance. so how did we balance the budget? we are limiting new positions citywide, largely to frontline workers. that's nurses, police officers, sheriffs, dispatchers with high rates of overtime. we've reduced our projected spending across capital, new it projects and equipment. there are reductions in contract budgets citywide, including in many grant portfolios, and that was largely based on underperformance. underspending or in areas that were non-direct services and ultimately, with our spending, we have strived to maintain core services. that said, there are reductions in this budget. on the revenue side, we've shifted e

the sfmta, along with df staff, rec park, the san francisco puc and the airport will join as one contingent in the pride parade. i will be joining with them. we also have a significant number of staff who will be participating in the trans march, next friday, june 28th, showing our unwavering support for lgbtq rights, include honoring and making visible the trans staff that we have at the agency. this is also a huge event for us. we've got pretty much all of our parking control officers and their supervisors out there on the streets directing traffic, helping tens of thousands of visitors find their way around the city. and it is also, of course, yet another event where we celebrate the real spirit of san francisco. and finally, i can't believe i'm getting to announce this. this is so exciting to me. it's also a request. one of the biggest requests that came out of the board budget workshop in january was the development of a merch store. and so we finally, as of today, have our first muni product out that will be available to the public. and of course, it is the muni ugly holiday sweater.
