>> actually, puck, all the puck people didn't like bryan. to put a fine point on it, they switched sides. they went from the democratic side to the republican. they thought bryan was dangerous, and if you take a look, this is the first cartoon ever depicting a presidential candidate as a bomb thrower and an anarchist and they were suggesting that he was dangerous to the united states of america and they had an entire theme in 1896 arguing that, yes, mckinley is no good but you have to vote for mckinley because bryan is dangerous to america. >> calling him a demagogue? >> calling him a demagogue, and he was a bit of a demagogue in the sense he was a great orator and people were enthralled with him. >> how valuable, how significant was that to the mckinley campaign? >> mckinley won in an enormous landslide in 1896. >> this is mckinley's easter egg. explain. >> this is one of the great interesting, ironic cartoons of american history. mckinley's vice president died in 1898. so, in 1900, when mckinley was up for renomination, he had to choose a
