first of the three properties nominated for individual landmark status is a former newt pullman hotel. [ inaudible ] >> -- and fire reconstruction period. the hotel primarily housed seasonal railroad and african american railroad workers including pullmans, porters and mads. they established the first all black union in the country, contributed to the development of the african american middle class and made important contributions to the krifg rights movement. this is the only property known in san francisco that has strong associations with porters and pullmans and maids. [ inaudible ] >> designation of the former new pullman hotel also meets the hpc's designations of under represented property type -- [ inaudible ] -- specifically african american history. next landmark designation is for the former pile drivers bridge and structural ironworke ironworkers local 77 union hall. maybe the new pullman hotel rises above the other two, but the fact that, you know, an edwardian buildings in south market -- there's certainly a lot of edwardian buildings in the city, and a lot of them are used for housing. it doesn't seem that it's that much of an elevation to a landmark status, and again, this is my opinion about that. i think the district is great, and i think the expansion of the conservation district also makes a lot of sense. i always wondered why those two buildings were sort of hanging out and in between everything, but -- but certainly have the character that make the district. so i certainly support all of that. thanks. >> thank you. commissioner johnck? >> well, i'm concerned -- i'm not comfortable with approving the fact that the owners didn't know about this. i'm concerned about that. i don't know. i just -- it makes me uncomfortable. i don't know how to handle it within what we're talking about. i know that that's happened before in our designation -- well, when i say happened before, that we don't always have, what -- landowner approval. i know that. i kno

i think the new pullman history was fascinating, and i think it's also worthy of just the pile driver. i think they're worthy of designation, and i also believe that this is a great addition -- this won't actually be a new landmark district, though, the clyde will just be an extension of the south end. >> tim frye, planning department staff. it was originally classified as an extension to the district because the history is very similar. after looking at the property type and because it's just small scale -- they're so small scale, and when you compare them to south end, we felt they really stood as their own district, which is why we've drawn a specific boundary line. >> okay. i was confused about the specific -- [ inaudible ] >> okay. that's great. i think it deserves to be such a great district. such a great name. >> i know. >> does anyone know -- all it says was the crooks now known as lusk. does anyone know when it changed specifically and why? >> i think we have a member of the public. >> i believe -- i don't know the exact date. i believe it's in the 1980's, it changed. there w

floated the idea of pardons for pullman ford and michael flynn the proposal suggests the president's attorneys will concerned about what flynn the money for it might reveal to the special counsel do you see that happening and by the way if he does pardon them does that mean they can testify for the townsell. it doesn't necessarily mean that they they were they wouldn't have to testify would kind of the circumstances yeah i saw that report and it's it would obviously be some incentive to pardon them in terms of to give them incentive not to cooperate with special counsel i think now that both have pled guilty and it's probably likely said we're going to say to the special counsel i don't think pardoning them would necessarily help the president too much as much as it would help them if the president thinks they were wrongfully charged or that the charges were trumped up but the reason you would pardon them before they pled guilty would be to keep them in the posture of don't cooperate don't say what you know and it's unclear i think the white house denies that or at least sarkozy sand

the -- only supervisors tang and safai were present, but the applicant, bob pullman from the diamond heights community association were there in support of the designation. one member of the public who is a member of the libertarian property argued against the designation. the supervisors did have questions about the ownership, which you know has been sort of an ongoing issue because it was a redevelopment agency property. we were able to locate some documents from the former redevelopment agency from the late 1960's that does indicate a conveyance to the city for its maintenance and ownership in the future, and so once we confirmed that with the department of real estate, we provided that information to the committee members after the hearing, and now, we're working with dpw just to iron out a few more details, including whether or not the arts commission will formally accept the safety wall as part of the city's art collection. the full board hearing is scheduled for tuesday, and i'll certainly keep you updated on the results from that hearing. 56 mason, which as you know, is a cat

the first is new pullman hotel, 228-248 townsend street. this is one of the last remaining examples of the numerous residential hotels built south of market area and primary lodging area for african-american railroad workers. and it's nationally age significant for establishing the first all-black union and african-american middle class. the commission initiated landmark on piledriver bridge local 77 union hall. located in the middle. the former union hall was at 457 brian street. it's significant as one of the remaining union halls that played an important role in the growth of organized labor and associated with 1906 post-earthquake and fire redevelopment. finally, the commission included local landmark designation at hotel utah as a representative of the pattern of development south of market that began in the 19th century when the area became the area of production in san francisco. it's a rare remaining example of the numerous residential hotels built to house seasonal workers employed by the factories on waterfront. however, during th
