she has seen puppy mills firsthand. she is founder of the puppy mill project.these dogs you will find up to five in a cage. minimum care. way below minimum care. a veterinarian with chicagos into cruelty societies say female bird dogs spend most of their lives in cramped cages serving only one purpose, to produce puppies. if you raise your poppies in to get bread again you will get bread again and you may never be out of that cage. a lot of these facilities don't have exercise areas even though it's required by law they may not see natural light and they may not ever see the outdoors or they may be living outdoors in a squalid conditions or they may be stacked up on top of each other. large scale breeding facilities regulated by the usda is a soapbox to pet stores are legal and there is no limit on how many dogs are allowed on site. just because a place is licensed does not mean that animal welfare is the most important thing to them. there are as many as 10,000 puppy mills in the u.s. into most of them are here in the midwest but only a fraction are licensed b

shelter is caring for two dozen dogs rescued from a puppy mill. the animals are getting care after some were found cramped in cages. darcy spencer has the progress to give them a new loving home. >> some of them are so scared they're shaking. one dog constantly walks in circles. these are among the nearly two dozen dogs rescued from a puppy mill in shelby, ohio, that are calling the washington animal rescue league home for now. >> they are in a little bit of rough shape with regard to help. but nothing that i think that will prevent them from getting better with some care. >> 220 chihuahuas and 50 sharpays were removed. the washington animal rescue league will care for 23 of them. here they'll get the medical care they need for skin conditions and eye disease. >> they were kept in very small quarters, sometimes multiple dogs in one cage. >> the shelter's behavior and training staff will also work with the dogs to get them ready for adoptive homes. they've already been given cute names like caramel cluster, moose tracks and splish splash. >> a lot
