>> julie, it's a beautiful day in qucbec city but it just took about an hour walk from the assembly through the old city. we just emerged from the grape behind the pier with some several hundred protesters, labor unions, environmentalists and others in many carrying signs as you can see surrounded by riot police. some are wearing masks. but there's been no trouble so far. this is one of the larger protests we have seen since the g7 began.the largest was on thursday evening. this one is comparable in size. we've been hearing a lot of chanting. they marched through normally very quiet part of the city. a beautiful part of this city where we saw a lot of shop owners, -- taking photos and videos as this eclectic group marched by. a lot of the shops boarded up before the weekend kicked up out of concerns. in 2001 as you might remember, they were incredibly violent protests in qucbec city for the summit of the americas. there were several hundred arrests during the event. 30 to 50,000 protesters. this is a look now at the size of the crowd. nowhere near that large but there are hundreds of people

a lot of officers at their but a lot was spent in qucbec city which is the closest big city tolamont the Ãthe summit of the americas was held here. there were massive violent protests. hundreds of people arrested and millions of dollars in property damage inflicted during that event. there was a lot of concern that might be repeated this time around. it did not happen. the turnout was dramatically smaller. today's big event drew a few hundred anti-g7 activists who marched from here to the national assembly for the old city. past the historic fairmont last chcteau hotel. some businesses were boarded up in anticipation of violence that never came. protesters think their message was in fact heard. >> it sent a message here that trump and the g7 is not welcome in canada or qucbec. i think it could have been a lot bigger. i think - - the labor unions didn't mobilize for this. didn't put their resources and mobilization powers behind this. >>reporter: the last of them we are aware of involving anti-g7 activists is a comedy show scheduled for 7:00 this evening. beyond that, no more protests

. >> rick leventhal has more from qucbec city tonight. >>reporter: the president's critics point to him arriving late and leaving early from the g7 thing he may not have this relationship with the world leaders as he says he did. but he had plenty of time for surprises during his 24 hours on the ground. among them, he proposed removing every stable tariff or trade barrier on american products and in return he would do the same on goods from the other g7 nations with that came with a threat. he said we are the piggy bank that everyone is robbing and that ends. canadian prime minister justin trudeau is already pushing back. he said canadians were polite and reasonable but we will not be pushed around after that, the president just tweeted from his jet, based on justin's false statements at his news conference and the fact that canada is charging massive tariffs to our farmers and companies, i have instructed our u.s. reps not to endorse
