as it travels across queensland it should weaken.t will bring heavy rainfall with stronger precipitation. you see here areas seeing up to 200 millimeters of rain. it is expected to strengthen a little bit more as it passes west of queensland and heading toward the northern tip of the northern territory. now as we look at the forecast for north america, we had a low-pressure system out of texas, another that dropped over los angeles is pushing toward the east. we'll see rainfall along the front as we go throughout thursday. areas to the north seeing cooler temperature, as well. look at this -- high of 2 in toronto. new york will see a high of 4 under sunny skies. i want to point this out. in the deep south highs in the 20s earlier this week. very warm temperatures. we've flipped the switch. down 11 in atlanta with a chance for rain through thursday. also seeing showers from denver into houston. hope you have a good day wherever you are. here's your extended outlook. very warm temperatures. >>> that's all for this edition of "newsline"

possibly 400 millimeters could occur around the cooktown area if you're in northern portions of queensland a lot happening in the tropics. we are going to continue to talk about this throughout the next several days. then as we move into the americas, we have this area of low pressure spinning up into southern portions of texas, pumping in that moisture into the gulf of mexico, bringing some heavy rainfall. that's on top of what's been occurring across the mississippi river valley. there's flash flood watches and warnings in effect for this time. we'll continue to track towards the northeast, though. temperatures look like this. houston with a high of 21. atlanta at 19. new york you'll be seeing some warming trend here in the next couple days as well. a 9 there for your high. and los angeles, look at that 28. actually record-breaking temperatures over the coming weekend expected out there for you. and then let's wrap things up here into east asia. we have this area of low pressure over northern japan. it's been bringing that rough weather. well, the good news is that it's tapering off by s

cyclone nathan made its first landfall in north queensland early friday. a remote area nathan which of the equivalent of a category 4 hurricane weakened as it passed over land. it may strengthen toward the very top of australia. and that second landfall expected to happen in the next 2 24 hours. derek is on top of it for us. >> for cyclones to continue with its strength and organization, it needs an ocean or some sort of water source to give it that fuel and energy needed to stay organized and to stay that category 4 equivalent as it was when it made landfall across the queensland coast. it's just that when it encountered land lost the moisture source that's why we saw the deterioration of the storm. you can clearly see what happened as ittentered the coast of far north queensland north of cooktown. look how it became disorganized and disrupted the flow of the storm. as it moved right back into the ocean waters, this is called the gulf of carpenteria. a shallow part of the ocean and warm part as well. perfect condition for the storm to fire up again. you s

and typically we've seen three to four cyclones make landfall across queensland. look at the satellite imagery, four days ago, three days ago, two days ago. it's meandered over this region, produced tremendous amount of rainfall. about 31 inches of rainfall that has come down offshore. while around cooktown around the order of 150 millimeters. 6 inches has caused damage to roads. the storm system on the return here. so more rainfall expected. and we know, of course the great barrier reef stretches here the largest reef system in the world. about 900 different islands dot this region. 3,000 different reefs dot this region as well. this is problematic. it decreases salinity breaks apart some of the coral. and that could take upwards of ten years to repair. so this storm system sitting in place for six days has not helped out. it looks like landfall sometime toward the latter portion of this week. some of the models suggest this could be a strong tropical storm. other models indicate this as a potential to strengthen quite significantly. look at the core of the storm

it's going to take a very unique track because it's going to get close to queensland and then make a-turn on thursday. so it is not expected to make a direct hit. however, it's going to produce heavy rainfall destructive winds, as well as very rough sea conditions, especially on your thursday. and across the flip side of australia a tropical cyclone category 1 system will likely intensify and then hit western australia by friday afternoon local time. so a lot of things are happening across the southern hemisphere. and then across europe we have a very low pressure -- a very slow-moving low pressure system across the eastern mediterranean countries. and this one will likely produce thunderstorms and a risk of hail across the south of the balkan peninsula, and this low over turkey will move across this area and help towards the middle east. a low pressure system is moving into the western parts of the scandinavian peninsula and a new storm is moving into the british isles. very blustery conditions especially over the north of the uk. temperatures at 11 degrees in london average tempera

nathan made landfall in queensland last week, and it made the second landfall over the week -- over the northern areas of the northern territory. and that is about to make the third landfall as a category 3 system. the landfall will be around tuesday morning. very destructive winds, as much as 170 kilometers are likely. and then move along the coast towards the west in to wednesday or even thursday. so heavy rain is likely to happen over a wide area some areas will see an additional 200 millimeters of rain. the ground is already very well saturated. additional rain worsening the situation. and across europe nasty weather continues over the mediterranean countries. we have one system over italy that has caused flooding in sardinia on sunday. now, the threat of thunderstorms, gusty conditions heavy rain will continue into monday morning for the south of italy, and the balkan peninsula. the system will move out as we go in to the latter part of monday. but new system will come in from the east. we have a strong system rotating over the iberian peninsula. this area will see heavy thundersto

however it is expected to dump extremely heavy rainfall for the northeast coast of queensland into the next several days. probably as much as 400 millimeters of rain could fall. so flooding is going to be a very high concern. now, across the americas we still have a slow-moving low pressure system over the southern plains and into the lower mississippi river valley. this system has dumped as much as 100 millimeters of rain in parts of texas. this has weakened slightly but still powerful enough to cause some more flooding rainfall across the lower mississippi river valley up into the ohio river valley into the next couple of days. flooding is going to be a very high concern in this area as well. but temperatures are quite warm so most precipitation should be rain. 23 degrees for the high with thunderstorms, 11 in new york. boston 7 degrees but sunny conditions so snow will continue to melt. now, before we wrap up i want to show you this video from massachusetts. a dog has been reunited with his owner in massachusetts on sunday from an icy river. police and firefighters responded to repo

nathan is starting to take easterly track so it's moving away from queensland. but because it's still near the coast, a gale force winds and heavy rain will likely continue at least into saturday across this location and then across the flip side of australia, we have olwin. olwin has been moving along the coast last night, still a category 3 system packing wind gusts of over 200 kilometers per hour. the track of winds are happening near the center and it's going to move down towards the south. this one will likely produce beneficial rain for southern areas where drought is still taking place. now in the northern hemisphere we have bavi. the third tropical storm for the western pacific ocean and this is expected to intensify and then across -- and then reach near saipan or guam by sunday. local time. so lots of things are happening, and then across hawaii yesterday we talk about blizzard conditions in the high mountains in the big island of hawaii. now we are talking about high surf conditions across the north and eastern sides of the hawaiian island chain. high

we're still seeing that spiral of clouds over the waters pulling into the northeastern coast of queenslandaustralia. we're now looking at some stormy conditions to start for you, starting tonight and into friday. about 200 kilometers per hour gusts could be felt over there and suss tanging winds of 150 because it's likely to intensify even further into a category 4 status. that's the second highest level of the tropical storm systems in the southern hemisphere. the rainfall amounts will also be topping as much as 300 millimeters in some isolated areas just north of cooktown and this is an area where the remote communities could receive this flooding rain and also the very stormy conditions throughout your weekend. so we'll keep a very close eye on this for you. now, to the north of this we have rainfall pounding central china. this is due to the heat coming in from the southerly area. yangtze river valley is where we're going to be finding thunderstorm advisories widely in place. thunderstorm advisories are also widely in place here in western japan. we've had a sudden burst of showers and

it has made landfall approximately friday morninging local time in the queensland coast of australia.ill spinning over land masses as a category 3, still bringing very stormy conditions out here. the good news i can give you is that this area is not significantly populated and the system is going to be quickly moving over land picking up its pace. which means it's not going to be accumulating a lot of that rainfall. still throughout friday we've probably seen about 300 millimeters of rainfall just north of cooktown. people here in cooktown, more than 500 residents are lost without power. that's going to pull it into the gulf intensify a little bit further, again before it hits the top end. again, it's not a significantly populated area. still the stormy conditions will all be affecting these areas. so please watch out for that and take precautions immediately. now, across california we've only been seeing about 25% of rainfall accumulation for the month, and we're likely to see the exceptional drought conditions continue across the southern areas. we have some images coming up to show

weakening toward category 1 tropical cyclone but expected to move toward the northeastern coastline of queensland. and by the time we go into thursday/friday look out for strong winds and heavy rainfall. so look out for that. now north america, we're seeing a very warm trend but that's creating some problems over into western pennsylvania. let me show you the video to give you an idea of what is going on. down on the ground level, where large chunks of ice are causing structural damage along the banks of the allegheny winter in wednesday pennsylvania monday. in parker about 60 kilometers northeast of pittsburgh an ice jam took out a deck ending up damaging homes and breaking docks. the river rose above seven meters, which is about one meter higher than the flood level. i think we may see a little bit of a cooling period because we have a cold front coming down and we're seeing some rain but that's only going to actually accelerate the melting process because we will still have the slight warming trend. so look out for that problem. meanwhile, the cooling trend will also take place for a good port

it is expected to weaken even more as it crosses over queensland and then reintensifying back to a category 1 tropical cyclone as you go in to the weekend. as it goes over waters. now in europe we do have a low pressure system we were talking about this one stuck down here in the iberian peninsula. yes, more rain expected for places like spain, and also in to portugal. even some of that moisture heading into france. meanwhile the central portions of the continent staying dry as high pressure continues to grip the area. another area of rain will be moving in to the scandinavian peninsula, possibly even some snow from time to time. way up north. 4 in stockholm, 13 in berlin rain in madrid with a high of 19 degrees as we go throughout the day. wrapping things up with a look at north america, we are still watching out for a couple areas of low pressure systems down toward the south. this is going to bring some more rainfall. meanwhile, back toward the west high pressure controls the weather. we are looking out for a cold front to drop from the north. that's going to bring some colder temperatur

may even intensify as a category 3 tropical cyclone and make its way toward the western coast of queenslandund cairns. the gusts will be reaching about 130 kilometers per hour. quite some stormy conditions to be felt into friday. but it's more of the heavy rainfall. about 400 millimeters could be accumulated into friday so the low-lying areas especially in the very extreme coast, these are the areas where flooding is certainly going to become an issue. another storm we are looking at this one has created some stormy weather across guam and saipan tossed trees around, destroyed some houses. but this is dispersed, as you can see, into the next 24 hours. so before making its way toward the philippines it looks like it will downgrade into a low pressure system. there are still some high surf advisories posted around guam with four-meter-high waves. possibly storm surge systems into eastern coasts of the philippines about the high waves will be enough to cause some damage. about two meters high. off toward the north of this we have a low pressure system across southern china. especially around h

back toward the west nathan moving over the queensland area and also olwyn which made landfall on fridaylet's talk about tropical cyclone nathan lingering just off the coastline. this did not make landfall but did bring high winds and also heavy rainfall. some areas over 200 to 300 millimeters including around the cairns area even extending upwards into cooktown. good news it is going to pull back out to see. bad news we'll see 50 to 100 millimeters. not moving fast enough. expected to reintensify once it gets back out over the coral sea. on the other side you can see some showers kicking up around western trial. that's because cyclone olwyn made landfall, about the equivalent of a weak typhoon if this was in the northern hemisphere. winds around 140 kilometers per hour sustained. but we did see some gusts during the overnight hours with this. around 180 kilometers per hour there into the area. this is definitely bringing some fairly rough weather for many of the people that live out here many miners in this entire community, and looks like it's going to move to the south in the next few

it's more the rainfall potential as the storm churns around the northern parts of queensland.the great barrier reef is just offshore. heavy rainfall can have a very negative impact on the great barrier reef. and we tropical cyclone owen. not a major populated area here but lots of rain anticipated as it heads towards perth later this weekend. this is the big one, tropical cyclone pam, and port villa has the potential to see extreme storm surge and strong winds. this is equivalent to a strong category 4 atlantic hurricane. if this stays on the east side of the islands we'll start to see some of the worst storm surge. but if it crosses over it will be the northern parts of the island that see the extreme storm surge. you'll notice that the particular area within this region is about 60 meters above sea level. so that's going to just put this particular port city in serious danger of the potential of storm surge. so strong winds, potential of storm surge and life threatening winds, as well. >> thanks, derek. we'll keep an eye on it. >>> armed men have made off with millions of do
