quentin and his brothers all served during world war i and quentin chose the air service and was 21 years old at the time of his death. flying in the air service was an honor, a tribute for young men who were daring. not long before quentin's plane was shot down and he was killed, he was placed in the 5th air squadron which was part of the first pursuit squadron and they were charged with following and tracking down german planes in the area. the battle of the second marne had been rising since the end of may and was a heroic effort to help stop the germans from reaching paris. on july 10, quentin had gone airborne and shot down his first and only known german kill and sadly four days the germans would get retribution against him. after he was shot down, there's some controversy whether or not the germans buried him with full military honors. we do know a temporary grave was placed around the site of where he fell, which is again beyond the ridge here. the roosevelt family was devastated. especially theodore, losing his youngest son in the war, a war he supported and had pushed the americ

quentin's remains stayed in the grave here until 1955. that's when his older brother , theodore junior, was interred at the american battle monuments commission cemetery in normandy. theodore junior had died at the normandy campaign from complications of heart disease. it was then that the roosevelt family felt that quentin would be more honored by lying next to his older brother. and so the american battle monuments commission allowed the family to take quentin's remains and place it in a world war ii cemetery. because there's such interest in seeing roosevelt's fountain in the site nearby where the plane was shot down, the local village has placed this historical marker, showing the type of plane he flew, a new port. underneath it here is young quentin with his mascot and dog. here is an early photograph of this fountain after it was first constructed. the fountain is on avenue quentin roosevelt in chamery in france.
