bruce rauner winning illinois's governor race against pat quinn.a sitting president's home state, illinois in this case, lost the governorship. we noted that some other firsts last night also happened that since 1892 prompted us to bring you this special election edition of daily spike. here's a first. as of last night, there'll be 100 women in congress. that's pretty big. it's the first time ever and, of course, still a long way from gender parity. but it's a pretty good start. way to go, america. also another midterm first, tim scott becoming the first black republican senator elected in the south since reconstruction. could the civil war finally be actually over? could racial tension be over? i think the answer's probably no to the latter, but it's a wonderful step. also, mia love rounding out this list. the utah republican becoming the very first black female republican elected to congress when she edged out democrat doug owens last night. like we said, a night of firsts. >>> just ahead, we heard from the winners, we're also going to hear from

we're going to begin with illinois where pat quinn gets 46%. beat out by bruce rauner, 51%. to maryland larry hogan grabbing 54% of the vote. anthony brown 45. massachusetts, charlie baker narrowly winning 48-47. and in maine, paul lepage winning 48-44%. fox news polls taking a closer look at how voters feel about facing the nation. 55% disapprove. >> 45% say the economy is the most important issue facing our country. 25% say health care. >> asked how worried americans are that there will be another major terrorist attack on the united states. 71% are at least some what worried. >> we asked how race relations have developed over the last few years. 38% say they have gotten worse. >> the path to republican power cuts right through colorado. a closely watched race ends with a challenger on top. we're live in denver with how the race helped shape the senate. >> and florida's medical marijuana proposal goes up in smoke. the other states taking a big step in the other direction. >>> it was one of the nation's most closely watched senate races. cory gardener defeating mark udall.

governor quinn pardoned 126 people ahead of the thanksgiving holiday. one of them is robert taylor of the "dixmoor five". they were a group of teens who were wrongfully convicted and served prison time for the 1991 rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl. quinn also denied 185 clemency petitions as he continues to go through a backlog of more than 25- hundred cases, in his final days in office. on the eve of thanksgiving, archbishop blase cupich praised president obama's decision to unilaterally grant amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. and he said, those who came to america without papers, or overstayed their visas, share the same dream as their predecessors who came here legally. >> become with the same aspirations that your parents and grandparents and ancestors did. as i said in my installation homily, that aspiration, to want to do better for their families is planted by god. >>cupich says, while the new amnesty is a good start, america's entire immigration system needs to be fixed. high-fat food can erase your memory. that's the claim of a ne

pat quinn in illinois has yet to concede. in maryland, hogan beating brown. republican charlie baker beating coaly in massachusetts. the governor's race in alaska, colorado and connecticut all right now still too close to call. a very close race in vermont means the legislate is going to be picking that state's next governor. >> several republican governors, one in georgia, what are his plans for the future? >> good morning. nathan deal fought hard against jason carter, the grandson of jimmy carter, former president, but nathan deal came out on top last night. his plans and what he's been running on is prison reform in the state of georgia and also the unemployment numbers here, the highest in the country at 7.9%. he claims he's going to create more jobs and get that number down. last night, at the college hall of fame here in downtown atlanta, here's what he had to say. >> we will continue to make georgia the best place in the country for every possible thing you can imagine, jobs, environment, family life, best place to live. we have it all going for us and

pat quinn tied with bruce rauner. this was a razor-thin race in 2010. what you're seeing, the story of illinois, it's all red. there are 102 counties in illinois. 98 of them in that election in 2010 voted republican. pat quinn became the governor because he was able to win this one big. this is cook county. this is chicago. this is cook county and three much smaller counties down state. he won four counties total in the entire state. what that translates into, as many as an amazing set of statistics. he won by 123 votes in a small county, 166 in a small county, 1,300 in another one and then 500,000 in cook county, all of that sea of red out there was against the democrats and against pat quinn. but because of one county where chicago is, because he won it so overwhelmingly, he was able to offset all those losses and barely win. so the calculation that the quinn campaign is making here is, president obama, where is he extremely popular in this country? chicago. cook county, illinois, his home stays. even if the suburbs who have sort of turned on obama a

as for illinois, republican bruce rauner tweeted pat quinn according to a cnn projection.tunning upset in heavily democrat maryland republican businessman larry hogan winning the governor's race. he defeated anthony brown, the state's lieutenant governor. and another deep blue below for democrats in massachusetts. republican governor races, charlie baker winning the governor's race over democrat martha coakley. this comes after eight years of democratic rule in that state under retiring governor deval patrick. now, we want to end on a lone bright spot for democrats. businessman tom wolf is the new governor of pennsylvania. the democrat defeating republican incumbent tom corbett in his bid for his re-election. one race that's undecided so far. colorado democratic incumbent john hickenlooper is neck and neck with hisle challenger bob beauprez, you can count on cnn to bring you the results. as we're looking ahead to 2016, governors do well on the national level. some have higher aspirations. we'll keep those names in the back of our mind. >>> this morning is a day of reckonin
