i want to bring in kansas city, missouri, mayor quinton lucas. good to see you again.hy do you think so many of your state's new cases are in younger people? >> i think if you look at a lot of the activities young peopleal are taking part in, bars have continued to be full, a lot of these larger parties. that's where most of our challenge is coming from. we're trying to remind young people they should be following social distancing rules, wearing masks. there's a little bit of youth in it and we're trying to get that to change. >> i'm reminded of a khalid song title. i think it's "young and dumb." you can't say that. that's a song title. mr. mayor, you recently extended the city's order to wear a mask in indoor public spaces and where social distancing is impossible. are people taking it seriously and following your advice? >> you know, they are, actually. when we first put on the order, there was a lot more dissension. we're in a red state here in the middle of the state. i think a lot of people, particularly in kansas city, even if they don't know why they're wearing

joining us now come the democratic mayor of kansas city, quinton lucas.n this year with a commitment that you were going to keep a number of homicides in kansas city in 2020 below 100 come up but here we are still in july in kansas city has already seen more than 100 murders. how bad is the homicide problem in your city and how do you explain it? >> mayor lucas: you know, i think there's a significant challenge in kansas city and a number of american cities that actually started long before black lives matter protests, long before covid-19 where we have an increase in homicides, more activity relating to illegal gun trafficking in our communities and enhanced and increased gang activities, so it's a very significant challenge, one which we have been very honest about with federal officials, our governor, and others saying we want to find a multifaceted approach to how to address it but we recognize just more patrols isn't necessarily the way. >> chris: do you think that the covid-19 and the reaction to the george floyd killing and antipolice feeling in co

and the mayor of kansas city quinton lucas joins us now. so good morning. thank you for being on.t really don't know. people started to ask me after that press conference where are the 200 arrests. how can they get that actually accomplished in less than two weeks? we are not that large of a place. how can you have an operation about solving unsolved murders 200 arrests not relatted to murders themselves? it is an ongoing challenge and concern. i have a strong relationship with our local u.s. attorney here but the challenge is that from washington and i think from leadership there is this desire to have a political and politicized operation and that's why you get claims like that that ultimately run foul. >> mayor lucas, it is willie geist. is it true you learned federal officers were in your city by reading twitter? >> so the u.s. attorney's office had talked to my office previously about federal support. and then there was no conversation and then one day i'm actually sitting in this office and they say, well, you were name checked at white house press briefing, they rolled out
