because there is a potential strike looming as it relates to freight trains two big unions are still in contract negotiations and that's kind of gone nowhere fast. one union has agreed to take the settlement the other hasn't this is a settlement negotiated by the biden administration. and so now there is a potential for a big freight strike coming up on december 9 that could impact those last-minute gifts coming to your local store for christmas. in addition, it could impact metro ridership. in other words, regional rail lines in d.c., new york, chicago, san francisco, if they don't come up with an agreement by december 9 and congress doesn't step in we could see gridlock on the nation's rail lines as well. overall, at this moment a pretty good picture coast to coast. back to you. >> tom, thank you very much. >>> well, now to a truly fascinating story of newborn twins. lydia and timothy ridgeway who set a record just by being born. that's because they are the result of embryos that were frozen three decades ago nbc's emilie ikeda tells us how it came together. >> reporter: at three weeks old, twins lydia and timothy are the youngest kids in the ridgeway family but in a sense they are also the oldest. >> it's pretty amazing. >> reporter: the brother and sister born from embryos originally frozen nearly 30 years ago in 1992 when their now parents were only a few years old themselves. >> just mind blowing to think that at that same point in time somewhere else giving like these children, 30 years later i hold in my arms. >> reporter: that's believed to be a record. not something the ridgeways were looking to set when they connected with national embryo donation center. it's part of what they say is a larger calling. >> we wanted to find these embryos that had been waiting for so long not to have the oldest embryos by any stretch of the imagination, but those that waited quite a long time. >> reporter: the process is called embryo donation when families who undergo in-vitro fertilization donate extra embryos for other couples. kept frozen until ready to be transferred. are there any risks associated with embryos that have been frozen for a longer period of time >> we have not seen any risk when you have that drop in temperature, all of the cellular processes that happy essentially stop >> reporter: many who turn to embryo donation are struggling with infertility something 1 in 8 couples experience like the gibson family, who previously held the record for the longest frozen embryo to come to birth. >> the people that made the hard donation to donate the embryos, we are forever grateful. >> reporter: as the success rate improves, experts believe stories like these decades in the making will become more common how are you guys feeling now >> very blessed. tired, but very blessed. >> reporter: for "today," emilie ikeda, nbc news. >> amazing story, right?
