r. kelly" widely attributed this movement for victims of r. kelly.e a lot of new information. is it the media or the moment? >> i think it's both. "surviving r. kelly"'s case, they were able to get a number of women who accused r. kelly of serious issues and assault, get them on camera so they could tell their stories in their own words in a way that was very emotive and connected with viewers. and that all happened in a period of time when we were rethinking what assault means, particularly rethinking believing women who come forward and talk about sexual assault. and we were also rethinking what the me too movement meant for black women. there was a sense that even though the me too movement brought justice for women but maybe black women hadn't been listened to in the same way. so this project came forward at a time when there were a lot of different trends sort of climaxing at the same time and i think people reacted very strongly to it. >> will, since r. kelly's conviction, there's obviously been another trend on social media, got a lot of peopl

r. kelly finally faced the music. counts against him after decades of allegations of sexual abuse. he faces a possible life sentence. both spears' and kelly's story was thrust back into the light after the years after the release of the documentaries brittney spears and surviving r. kelly. so how does the past look in a 2021 vision, and what does it say about our future and culture of entertainment in this country? my panel is back with me to discuss it. and joining the panel is a tv critic for npr and an msnbc media analyst. great to have all of you with us. eric, let me start with you. you spoke to a producer. she told you, quote, american history isn't history until there's a movie about it. and these documentaries for the most part they don't contain much new information, but what is it about the projects that explains the impact? is it the medium or the moment? >> well, i think it's both. and surviving r. kelly's case, dream was able to get a number of women who had accused r. kelly of serious issues, serious misc

r. kelly.she was supposed to testify and ended up not having her testify. one woman who testified spoke to cbs after that verdict and she told cbs's gayle king about how difficult it was for her to be back there and face r. kelly once again. >> it was very disturbing to have to relive those moments and, i don't know, a piece of me was happy because i felt like -- >> happy? >> yeah. because i felt like this person no longer has control over me, you know. you don't tell me what to do and what to wear and where to go and how long to be in a room anymore. >> when she testified she used a sued nim because she didn't want her name to be attached to her testimony at the time but she did come forward revealing herself to cbs. we heard women who testified in the previous trial in 2008. one won said this verdict, the 2008 trial he was acquitted, but this guilty verdict, lisa van allen said, is what she had been waiting for all these years and attributed it to all of this collective group of women who cam
