this is zooming in on morocco, luis rubiales —— rabat is up there, but if you look there, the high atlasns has borne the brunt of it. they're our correspondents is. we are in the village in the high atlas mountains, near to where the epicentre was. it is hard to access, but the bigger problem is once you actually here, moving around is a very rugged terrain, it is very difficult. to try to get heavy lifting equipment, operated by rescue teams here, it has proved it's really challenging. we have seen no signs so far since we have been there, of any official or formal response. just look at the sense of damage and destruction. this was one particular neighbourhood in the spillage of a few thousand people, and most of these are either breeze block built homes, as you can see, or they are these kind of mudbrick and timber constructions. they are not built to withstand earthquakes. you can see the result. here, there was a family of six people, five of them were killed, and only one survived. the father of this family, who we are told, is now extremely distraught. we were just chatting to one

she joins us from near rabat. thank you so much for joining us here.o as i understand it, you're some, what, 200 miles away from the epicenter. did you feel it? is there damage where you are? >> hello, thank you so much. yes, we actually felt it. we were -- we thought that it was like slightly like -- less effective than in other areas. like it was too strong in the marrakesh area in general. but it was really strong to also hit the nearby region. >> so put this in perspective for us, in terms of other earthquakes the country's seen. i mean, how bad is this? >> it is really bad. you know that the marrakesh region has a population of 4.3 million people, estimated by the acp in 2014. so a lot of people got affected by the earthquake which killed at least 639 people so far. this data dates back -- it was just collected as of 7:00 a.m. moroccan time. and a lot of people also injured, and the number is estimated at 339-plus. so i mean, the numbers speak for themselves already. it's morning day for moroccans, and across the world a lot of people and a lot of

people have felt some of these aftershocks as far as rabat in the capital and other parts surrounding the epicenter of this in the village southwest of marrakech. it's a popular tourist destination. 840,000 people. however, the vast damage has happened in the mountain ranges that are hard to reach. so that's where the most deaths are coming from, injuries are coming from. this is a very early account of what happened in this earthquake. the worst to hit this country since 1900, even though these kind of earthquakes are uncommon, they are not completely out of the ordinary, but the extent and breadth of this is something that is shocking to scientists. >> yeah, and a lot of the video we are seeing showing these, you know, collapsed or partially collapsed buildings, talk about, you know, i have been to morocco and spent time there. speak about the older buildings as a particular issue in a place like morocco. >> reporter: so some of the early analysis says that some of the historic walls of the medinas in marrakech have been destroyed, they are historic. that's part of the reason marrak
