rachael bade you have new tweeting on what we may see today. we're entering this fascinating phase where republicans and democrats get to ask questions on these cute little cards. very small little cards which are unique in that there's one thing a senator hates and that's being succinct. there's a look at it right there. but you are getting some reporting on what the senators might choose to ask and to whom. >> yes, that's exactly right. both sides are going to try to use their time, at least part of their time, they each have eight hours to ask questions. to basically go after the impeachment managers or the white house defense. basically democrats want to ask the white house defense team about what they knew about john bolton's book. there's already been a statement from the white house saying some of these guys had not seen the manuscript when they were up there saying the allegations the military aid was being held for an investigation was not true. i was talking to senator kaine the other day. he said i feel misled, like they lied to me.

joining us now rachael bade for "the washington post." so what now, rachael? >> what now? i mean, i think the key question here everybody's looking at pelosi. what is she going to do with these articles of impeachment? last night she told her caucus in a private meeting she's still going to hold onto them. she wants to see this resolution that mcconnell is putting together that basically puts out the procedures for the senate impeachment trial. but, see. i don't know that mcconnell is going to give her that. she's clearly looking for a way out, a concession to send over these articles. and she wants to see the rules in the senate. but i mean, mcconnell kind of seems to be relishing this almost. i mean, she doesn't have a lot of leverage. he knows that, and he's sort of blasting her for playing politics from the senate floor right now. and, you know, seems to be sort of enjoying putting her in this position. >> just so i'm clear, i know mitch mcconnell is saying that he has enough votes to begin a senate trial without the articles of impeachment? >> it sounds like he's not

so it's not a mystery, rachael. >> yeah.t there's, you know, sort of another side of this which is house impeachment investigators could have called him in and heard his account first hand. you know, democrats privately were grappling with that question when they were at the point of deciding do we move to impeachment right now? or do we want to wait a little longer? right now this argument that you heard susan collins made, the notion the house didn't do its homework, they should have fought hard tore get more evidence. i'm surprised to hear susan collins making that argument because she has said she is open to witnesses. but this is going to be a top talking point for republicans, i think, in the next couple of weeks. i think that is going to be one of the number one arguments they make to try to shut down new evidence, hearing from witnesses. i mean, you agree with it or not, but to hear susan collins make that argument is really significant. because she's one of the ones that democrats need to convince. >> all right. tha

rachael, we know how the vote to convict the president will go. it's a little bit less clear where the vote on witnesses will be. but is there any indication that any senator on the republican side is going to stand up this morning and say, you know, i don't think the president should be removed from office but what alan dershowitz said is crazy? >> you know, it's funny because he is both a hero for them in their eyes and somebody that now they have to put distance between themselves and him. after he first appeared on the senate floor after the bolton revelation, a lot of republicans who didn't know how to react to the bolton news and this fact that bolton in his book apparently ties the president's words specifically in what he heard to holding the ukraine money for this investigation of the bidens, they didn't know what to say. they didn't know how to react. and dershowitz appeared on the floor the next day and made this sort of argument that, hey, even if this is true, it's not impeachable. therefore, you don't need to hear from any more witne
