this is part of the reason i wrote a book about rachel carson. i wanted to understand where this movement came from, the role that she played in it and why we have this party sentiment of a safe, right left argument all the time about environmental matters. it doesn't seem logical. we all live in the same global ecosystem. it shouldn't be something we can't agree on and get we can't agree on it. so carson is the fault line in my view between two important aspects of our relationship with the natural world, to the historical movements. the first half of the 20th century was about conservationists in. this is the idea we should be good shepherds for the earth, preserve the resources they have and we should preserve heritage of wildness that the country was premised on for future generations. this is not particularly controversial idea. this is not something people disagree quietly about. it's never simple to consider something if it's sitting in somebody's way. but basically this is a nonpartisan concept. in 1962, when carson published "silent spri

i call rachel carson a tipping point between these two things. she had a strong presence in the conservation movement and was really an effect founder of the modern environmental movement. i think it's possible to point to a specific movement in time when that happened, when we begin to think about our environment and relationship to the tiered it came in the late summer of 1962 a month before "silent spring" was published. in june 1962 from "the new yorker" magazine published excerpts from "silent spring" and through the course of the summer, huge controversy flared up around the book and people began to take sides, and people began to become worried about what carson was warning everyone about. by the end of august, this is in public agenda. i will show you now a video that is good as any other identifiers is tipping point, displacing time for a rethink about environmentalism. the parents got a reverse 911 call, rachel.ow that they came here as the children were brought here. and they went through the work, and we're talking about hundreds of kids now, of matching the children with their parents. in the end you have 20 sets of parents who are left. and it is left to be told to them. and the governor was among those who were there to tell the parents that your children are not going to be coming home. and so i think it goes without saying the devastation that this community is feeling. the sense of -- i wouldn't even say outrage yet. in my experience at these things, the outrage comes later. but the total feeling of hopelessness and senselessness that has overcome this community as they try to figure out why something like this could happen, rachel. >> chris, thinking about that initial response, thinking not just about what it must have been like to be personally connected to that, but to be a first responder coming upon that scene and needing to do the active shooter search that we know that law enf

earlier tonight, i asked rachel's comments from mr. lapierre. >> wayne lapierre came out after a week of silence. he talked about disdain for the media, violent video games and the lack of security at school was part of the problem but avoids guns being part of the problem. what's the reaction from this press conference? >> in washington the reaction was somewhat shocked by the news conference just because of the tone. it was so different from what we've been hearing from others in particular president omo bama who had called out on gun control. he's made this commission that vice president will lead that's supposed to report backy. and then wayne lapierre came forward and talked about putting armed officers in the nation. he was not aiming for the beltway crowd. that's important to remember. it will be interesting in the next few weeks and months how his comments played in other parts of the country outside the beltway. that's who he was talking to. >> he made the rounds in the morning talk shows and stood his ground despite the backl
