rachel ferguson joins us with details and more in her world weather forecast. >> that's right. we are looking at the potential for a tropical storm. right now it's a tropical depression out here they're the caroline islands. quite far down there just to the bottom right of your screen. this looks like it's going to become a tropical storm and head up towards the northwest. we want to keep a close eye on it. we already have a lot of very heavy rain and strong gusts falling along a front that's been stretched out across the southern japanese islands, taiwan, and affecting eastern china the last several days. what we're going to see is a little bit of movement with this system. it's going to be starting to affect parts of western and central japan today. but unfortunately, it's not really shifting away from the southern japanese islands or taiwan so we'll see ongoing heavy rain in land that's already saturated. okinawa maybe seeing 120 to 150 millimeters of rain in a 24-hour period from this system. in some parts of okinawa, reports of 100 millimeters in the space of three hours.

let's go straight to rachel ferguson at the weather desk for latest situation and what is to expect in taiwan. rachel. >> hi there. the long front that is bringing all of that heavy rain across taiwan has also been affecting the southern japanese islands and the southern coast of china. now unfortunately it does look like there is going to be more rain in store for taiwan. in the last several days even brought about 500 millimeter of rain. the next couple of days we'll see continuing heavy rains, particularly down to the south. 100 millimeters at least is likely. into the weekend it is going to ease on -- off a little bit. there will be a little bit of time to recover. however, we do have a tropical storm here. now this one is -- is at the moment quite far from large land masses. it is moving at the moment west at 15 kilometers an hour. the wind gusts getting up to 90 kilometers an hour. but it is on the path towards the philippines. it looks like it will be coming quite close to central or northern locations by the end of the workweek. and strengthening as it goes. into the beginning

with rachel ferguson. >> hi, there, yes, we have a couple storm to talk about this hour. we will start with guchol in the pacific. a severe tropical storm. moving west, 10 kilometers an hour. sustained winds 100 kilometers. gusts at 162 kph. looks like it will be moving parallel to the coast of the philippines, heading towards taiwan and swerving to the japanese southern okinawa island. now, it is going to be a strong typhoon, by saturday morning. and a very strong typhoon by monday morning as it approaches taiwan and the southern japanese islands. that's the forecast. now although it doesn't look like we are going to see a direct landfall, it certainly is going to be causing a lot of problems. this is going to be a very powerful system bring strong winds th will mean the waves are going to be very choppy, of course. storm surge to deal with. a lot of rain. there has already been a great deal of rain, along the seasonal front stretched out from southern china through taiwan and into japan. so there is already a serious flooding situation in many of these areas. as the guc

rachel ferguson joins us now with the world weather forecast. >> hi there. yes, the rain has cleared up and it stays a little bit cloudy and overcast so far this moing. i want t go ahead and start as usual in eastern asia but draw your attention to the bottom of the jean. you can just about see an intense ball of cloud and that is a tropical storm. it is currently west of the carolina islands moving west at 15 kilometers an hour. winds are currently at 65 kilometers an hour with gusted at about 90. the system looks set for strengthening and looks like it is heading in towards the central to northern philippines where it should arrive toward the end of the work week. this is just a system right now to keep a very close eye on. we'll keep you updated as we go through the next few days. this is the seasonal band that has been really dominating the weather news for this side of asia for the last several days. this is the same system that brought heavy rain in towards parts of japan yesterday. it started to move out though so should be a clear day across much of

let's turn to rachel ferguson at the weather desk. >> hi there. we're going to be seeing some showers later on this evening. there is going to be some more consistent rain down towards the south, though, however, because the rainy season has started for many other areas in the region. we've got this stalled out front here across taiwan and the southern japanese islands. that's been bringing heavy rain for the last several days. and that's going to continue into the next 24 hours. the southwest monsoon has also been getting started here affecting parts of southwestern china as well as areas in and around the bay of bengal. so northeastern india, bangladesh, myanmar as well seeing periods of heavy rain as well as the indochina peninsula. you'll also notice we have a storm symbol here. a tropical depression just east of the philippines. and it's likely to become a tropical storm by friday night. so this one continuing to bring flooding downpours across the philippines into the next 24 hours. and it will continue its path north just swerving to the ea

. >>> rachel ferguson joins us with the world weather forecast.re going to get more information on the storm developing in the pacific. >> yes, this is guchal, a severe tropical storm heading over the philippines and continues to strengthen as it goes. to give you the late eest figures sustained winds above 100 kilometers per hour with gusts to 144. it looks like it's heading toward the northern half of the philippines, potential for direct landfall. it's hard to say at the moment. by saturday morning local time this is going to be a typhoon so we're looking at continued strengthening, that will mean strong winds affecting the philippines and storm surge and then it looks like it's heading in towards taiwan later to the southern japanese islands which is basically the worst route that it could go at the moment because there has been so much rain here across southern japan, and into taiwan over the last week or so. the stalled out seasonal front has just been bringing astronomical amounts of rain and it still does today even as we have another low

let's now turn to rachel ferguson for the updates and the rest of the world weather forecast. >> that'se have a severe tropical storm heading towards the philippines right now. this massive cloud you can just see to the bottom of your screens. this is severe tropical storm, currently moving west at 25 kilometers an hour, wind speeds sustained at 20 miles an hour with gusts over 120. it looks like it will be heading towards luzon, possibly making landfall here if it does so on your sunday/monday overnight. and then perhaps heading towards taiwan. however, it could actually veer further toward the east and head up towards okinawa. now it will continue to intensify becoming a typhoon saturday morning. that will be local time. whichever way it moves, we will be looking at an intense system bringing strong winds and heavy rain. that is a particularly of concern to -- these islands here up, up near -- the south of china. we are talking taiwan. and then japanese southern islands as well. because they have been seeing sustained heavy rain for quite some time along the seasonal front. parts of t

let's go to rachel ferguson for an update in the world weather forecast. >> absolutely true. i suppose it plans on what time you are planning on getting out of the office today. certainly the will be some thundershowers from the afternoon. take a look at our maps and see what's going on. i've been hearing that a lot of people saying that the rainy season has started here in japan. and you can be forgiven for thinking so. it's been quite wet. a few rainy days this week already and another one today. it's not the rainy season just yet. what's happening is the ground temperatures are improving so it's getting warmer. and then when we get some cold air coming across aloft with the system we can get that impact with sudden showers and thunderstorms. that's what's happening once again today. further down towards the south, though is where we'll find the rainy season in full force. along this band the southern japanese islands, taiwan being affected by ongoing heavy rain for the last couple of weeks. the southwest monsoon is helping to bring heavy downpours for southwestern china. a
