once again with rachel ferguson, rachel. >> hi there.oing to start off showing you footage out of clie na and show you what's happening with floods here. this is gansu province, china's northwest province saw torrential rainfall which triggered landslides damaging buildings and destroying roads right across gansu. the intense rainfall accumulated to over 200 millimeters in a short time on wednesday. a total of 63 roads were closed by either flood waters and or mud. cars also became trapped in the mud. a few were completely buried by the landslides. today, crews continue to work to try to clear the streets of debris. officials estimate that the work will be completed in just about a week. so, the heavy rain does continue up towards the northeast. the south as well. heavy rain on its way to luzon. this is a tropical depression set to become our next named storm. in the west pacific. you're going to see heavy rain in the next 72 hours. anything up to about 200 millimeters is possible where you're seeing those oranges pop up. that will be an

rachel ferguson from the weather team has more. rachel. >>> hi there. this is a storm we've been tracking for the last several days. it's actually just started to move more steadily towards taiwan. it's been sitting here towards the northeast of the philippines for a few days now. it's now heading 20 kilometers an hour fairly steady pace west-northwest. it's expected to make landfall in northern taiwan wednesday night local time. and then on thursday morning a second landfall. now, it is expected to become a tropical depression. it's now a severe tropical storm. but it will downgrade after making that second landfall in southeastern china. even though it does so it's still expected to bring a lot of heavy rain across southern china for the next several days. it's already brought really tremendous amounts of rain across taiwan, across the northern philippines even though it hasn't made any direct contact with the philippines or taiwan yet. it's because it's really enhancing this southwest monsoon. this time of year we have these monsoonal rains and moist

. >>> there is a tropical storm near taiwan and rachel ferguson from the weather team has been following the story. rachel? >>> things are looking very wet and windy indeed. this is a strong severe tropical storm. it has been impacting taiwan today and the eye of the storm has just moved past the northern tip of the island. it is now expected to make landfall in the southeastern coast of china in the early hours of thursday morning. so you can see the reach of this storm. it is bringing some strong winds, 108 kilometer per hour sustained winds with 162 kilometer per hour gusts in okinawa, we heard that 100 kilometer per hour gusts were recorded. it's really the rain from the system that has been bringing the most concern. for the last several days, places like the northern philippines and taiwan have been hit hard by the rains from trami, in the past week, you can see totals of 500 to 600 millimeters, really bad flooding across parts of northern philippines as well as taiwan. we were showing pictures earlier today. here are pictures from the philippines once again. this is 80 kilometers

rachel ferguson from the weather team has more. rachel? >> we've been looking at this system for about the last week it's been sitting towards the northeast of the philippines, just rotating here. it's now a tropical storm and is going to be intensifying into the next couple of days. heading towards the northwest. here it is. trame is moving north-northeast. winds are sustained at 65 kilometers per hour, with gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour. now as it heads toward taiwan and then later, the southeastern coast of china, it is expected as i said to intensify. expecting it to become a severe tropical storm by tuesday. but it has already been producing significant amounts of rain. for places like northern philippines, as well as taiwan. it's helping to enhance the southwest monsoon here across these places. all of this moisture flowing in to the system, across these areas. it's expected to become a severe tropical storm by tuesday and continue developing as it moves further towards the northwest. now, it's already been bringing significant

rachel ferguson from the weather team has more. rachel. >> hi there, yes. very heavy rain across central portions of japan in toyama, a record and about 61 millimeters in the space of one hour. we're talking about really heavy rain over a short period of time. if i pull back and show you what we're seeing here in terms of the fronts and the systems, you'll be getting an idea of why we're experiencing so much rain. we've got two low pressure systems towards the north. and then a front extending back across the korean peninsula and into eastern china. a lot of moisture flowing into that front. we're going to be seeing more of that heavy rain as well as potential for severe storms, lightning, hail, even tornadoes can't be ruled out. in fact, much of eastern asia's going to be experiencing heavy rain. down towards the south here i want to show you to the east of the philippines right now this one is likely to be our next named storm. right now it's a low pressure system, but it shows good signs of developing, becoming a tropical storm. unfortunately, it's track

rachel ferguson from the weather team has the details. rachel. >> absolutely. in india as well, very heavy rain has led to extensive flooding. we'll show you the picture on the ground here as well. people making their way through sky-high floodwaters. very intense rainfall brought by the southwest monsoon hit central india last weekend, claiming 20 lives and displacing 8,000 people. the floods inundated roads across the region by cutting off travel and communication. this year india has been hit by numerous floods, the worst being in northern india in june where hundreds were killed, mostly pilgrims, and thousands actually are still missing. many experts believe that mass deforestation has led to soil erosion. and that has led to the resulting increase in flooding in the country. so a really serious situation at the moment. the last week has brought some very heavy rain. you can see it here. those reds are popping up, up towards the northeast as well and coming in towards indochina, very heavy rain as well. we get this every year. the southwest monsoon, of cour

we have rachel ferguson from the weather team. rachel. >>> hi there., heavy rain has been affecting many parts of japan today. we'll show you some pictures of what was happening in tokyo before nightfall today. nagoya saw about 100 millimeters of rain in just a three-hour period. fukushima also reports of homes damaged by heavy rain and flooding. has been quite a lot going on across the country today. wednesday looks like it is going to be a much clearer day. there will still be the potential to see some thunderstorms in the afternoon hours with daytime heating and we will see temperatures steadily building in toward the weekend as well. tokyo saturday and sunday looking for about 35 degrees on the thermometer but for the time being, wednesday will be a bit clearer so good news there. other parts of eastern asia not going to be so for nat. still heavy rain from northeastern china down to the southwest. very unstable. down toward the south as well, more rain but where it is not coming in is of just as much importance. we have extended drought conditions

rachel ferguson from the weather team is here with the details on that. rachel? >> all right. landfall this morning, thursday morning. well, now it is tracking inland in china. it's still packing winds of 65 kilometers an how and gusts of 90 kilometers an hour. it is starting to wind down. it's moving quickly, which is good news. means we're not going to have the rain hitting one place for a prolonged period. that said it is still going to be giving us totals of 150 to 200 mill peters of rain for the next couple of days. now, in the last three days we have seen some tremendous totals across portions of the northern philippines and also taiwan. taiwan here some places getting more than 700 millimeters of rain in three days. these totals you're seeing here represent what we usually see in about a month. and this just fell in the last three days. that's why we have the extensive flooding situation here and also in the northern philippines. this system has been really helping to enhance the southwest monsoon across these areas, which is why we've been getting just so much rain fro

rachel ferguson has the latest weather forecast. >>> we have been tracking a tropical storm heading inern vietnam. i will give you the latest statistics on it. moving northwest at 30 kilometers an hour. it is giving us winds sustained at 72 kilometers per hour. it is expected to make landfall wednesday night local time that is. quite shortly. after that it should make -- it should start to weaken off and become a tropical depression. having said that it is still going to be bringing us heavy rain for the next couple of days through indo china in excess of 200 millimeters likely. we are probably seeing flooding in here. waves up to about 3 meters at the coast as the storm approaches. you can see storm surge with that, as well. we will keep you updated as we move along. heavy rains impacted western china right up into the northeast where we are not getting the rain is also very problematic because it has been so hot and dry with drought conditions persisting for quite a while now. and unfortunately not much change there. the heat is going to be staying in china, the central and eastern p

rachel ferguson from the weather team has more on this. rachel? >>> hi there. yes, it has been very hot for a while across china and up into the korean peninsula as well. we've been seeing a couple very hot days. in fact, these are the heat warnings and advisories that we saw on thursday. quite a large swath here of eastern asia being affected. let's show you some video out of hangzhou to show you what's going on. people desperately trying to keep cool with fans and umbrellas to protect themselves from this very oppressive heat. in hangzhou temperatures reached 41.1 degrees on wednesday. this is the hottest day it's been since records began in 1951. a record-breaking temperatures were felt right across china and taiwan today on thursday. some of the hottest temperatures yet amid an already potent and long heat wave. now with the extreme weather expected to last, many people are being asked to limit their outdoor activities. that's the advice coming from the government but the extreme heat and dry conditions have also damaged at least one-third of the tea trees
