rachel ferguson from the weather team has been following this storm. rachel, how bad are things expected to get? >> all right, gene, right now the storm is situated in the bay of bengal, quite far off from the coast of india for a moment. it was battering small islands a few days ago, but now it's all the heavy rain and those winds affecting the sea, really. until the next couple of days, when it is going to be proceeding closer to the coast and then we're going to be seeing the storm making landfall. for the time being, the winds are at 135 to 45 kilometers an hour, gusts at 155 kilometers an hour, so it is a pretty powerful system. there's potential for it to strengthen before it makes landfall, but we really need to see what's going to be happening as it approaches the coast. in terms of the rainfall, right now it's giving about 200 millimeters, but as it heads further in towards the coast, we're just going to be watching to see what happens. certainly, storm surge and flooding are going to be high risk. on into eastern asia, and things are looking q

. >>> there's a storm over northeastern asia, and our rachel ferguson has been following the situation. rachel, give us the latest. >> hi, there, gene. up towards the northeast is looking very stormy, indeed. it is a snowstorm affecting northeastern parts of china and up into southeastern portions of russia there. now you could see about 15 centimeters of snow widely, in addition to maybe about 30 centimeters in some areas. very strong winds going with that, as well. as for japan, you're getting the tail end of this storm. the front is sweeping across much of the country and from north to south we've seen some really strong winds and heavy rain here, even parts of okinawa, nara getting some heavy rain, as i say, all the way up towards the north. as the system pulls away tomorrow, we are going to be seeing snow forming across the korean peninsula, as well as the western edge of japan. this is going to continue as the sea effect machine gets going here, really through the end of the work week, so we'll be seeing that snow accumulating through northern japan and also temperatures dropping

. >>> let's now bring in rachel ferguson for a check of the weather. rachel, we've had a week of severe weather, now i understand there's another powerful system in the south china sea. >> you're absolutely right, we have a typhoon here. it made landfall yesterday in northern luzon in the philippines, now it's heading to the south china sea. it is still a strong typhoon. that's the category it's in at the moment. gives us winds of 126 kilometers an hour to gusts up to 180. it's likely to weaken off as it heads through the south china sea, but for the moment, it is still a potent system and bringing heavy rain and destructive winds still for northern portions of the philippines. we'll see the heavy rain mostly falling over water, so that's some good news at least, but still seeing a lot of moisture over taiwan, as well as the southern japanese islands. in fact, we have an area of heavy rain traveling further north over the weekend. it's right here and develops a bit and is going to be heading in towards japan. nice and sunny over the weekend in much of j

rachel ferguson from the weather team has the details. rachel. >> thank you, gene. yes, we have a very stubborn low rotating over the sea of japan right now, and it has been bringing some wet and windy weather up towards the north. as well as hokkaido has been seeing those showers. it's going to turn over to snow certainly in the upper elevations as a blast of cold air comes across from the northwest. here over the weekend, this eastern edge has been very dry and mild as well. temperatures above average. but that will change as the cooler air filters in from tuesday. the same system is affecting northeastern china and southeastern russia. you've been getting some snow. you can see another ten centimeters in the next 24 hours as well as some gusty winds which, in turn, could reduce visibility, making for some dangerous driving conditions. much of the rest of china, mongolia as well staying dry under strong high pressure. then down to the south, scattered showers across the philippines as well as indochina. here in vietnam, experiencing very heavy rain for the last co

rachel ferguson has been keeping a close eye on the situation for us. rachel, how serious is the latest situation? >> in some respects it could have been worse. we thought this one could be a tropical storm, as it is, it is moving across as a tropical depression. that said, we're still getting some gusty winds with this one, high waves in the eastern coast up to about three meters today and also widespread rain, up to about 50 millimeters in some places, up to about 100 millimeters, so any additional rainfall is going to be extremely unwelcome, it could really exacerbate the flooding situation, lead to more mudsl e mudslides and landslides and get in the way of the rescue and clean-up effort and helping aide workers get into the worst-hit areas. this is an unfortunate system to have to deal with. after it leaves the philippines, it is expected to strengthen as it heads in towards southern portions of vietnam. it will be expected to make a landfall later on in the week. we'll bring you more on that a little bit later. let's head up to the big picture. imm

rachel ferguson has the details. >> things are looking very clear across much of china and the koreaneninsula as far up there as mongolia, but saz for japan, the snow is going to continue to come the. in the last 24 hours, we had more than half a meter in hokkaido, even down towards kyushu, we're seeing pretty good amounts of accumulation of snow there. it's the sea effect snow coming down. strong winds from siberia, then dumping the moisture mostly along the western coast there. so we have the snow going on up here. down towards the south, it's going to be the rain. some heavy rain hitting parts of the philippines, central portions particularly, then down across parts of indochina, vietnam, and heavy rain, more than 100 millimeters reported in southern thailand. temperaturewise, things are going to be improving. they already have quite a bit for places like beijing and seoul, 10 degrees on saturday. just a few days ago, you were looking at a high of just above the freezing point. 13 degrees in shanghai, 19 in taipei. you'll be seeing a warming trend beginning next week, when temperat

rachel ferguson is standing by. what can you tell us? >> things are gone back to the regular weather pattern we see across the philippines. we've got scattered showers and thunderstorms here. the really heavy mass of rain is starting to affect portions of vietnam. this is the tropical depression we're starting to see. it's spreading moisture to the north of vietnam. this is a place that has already had considerable amounts of rain in the last week or so. there will be increased flooding and landslides. another tropical system is expected to strengthen to a deep depression before making landfall and bringing heavy rain in across southern india. over the next three days you can expect anywhere in the orange which is just there on the coast, if you can see getting the worst of it, about 200 millimeters of rain is possible. elsewhere, let's go to the americas. things have been looking wintery here all week with the snow up in the northeast and up in the northwest as well in the mountains. strong high pressure is keeping things very clear and
