rachel. >>> hi there, yes. quite a lot of rain there to report into eastern asia. we're going to start in japan where heavy rain's been ongoing for the northern half of the country. i want to take you to some pictures. this is miyagi prefecture. some record breaking rainfall recorded today, 124 millimeters. and that's just in the space of three hours. now, you can see the floods here are really pretty dramatic pictures there. the gutters just overflowing and rivers running into fields there. unfortunately, it looks like it is going to be a wet weekend across much of the country. we've got a low sitting just off the sea of japan coast right here and to the south another front which is bringing heavy rain across from northern china through the korean peninsula and in towards southern japan. so you're going to have a good chance of showers across much of the country. and of course this is falling on already saturated land. it's not just here, but also in northwestern china we've been seeing some heavy rain really adding to those floods. here are some pictures, first o

rachel. >> hi there, yes, things are starting to get very unsettled indeed for northeastern portions of japan and yamagata, 63 millimeters of rain fell in the span of just one hour. we have video showing you what has been going on. there's lot of moisture moving in japan, we're getting thunderstorms and heavy rain as well. that's going to be continuing into tuesday. then a break in the daytime. wednesday night there will be another low pressure system coming in and bringing yet more of the same kind of conditions. the low pressure system is coming across from northeastern china. right now we've got this very active rain ban spread out across northeastern china, north korea down into central portions of china as well. that's of particular concern because we had of course that earthquake that happened earlier on today in gansu province. the worst hit areas are actually just north of this active rain ban. so managing to escape that very heavy rain, but still there are showers. we're expecting to see them clean up a little bit into the middle of the week. so that certainly should help th

rachel. >> hi there. heavy rain is in store for japan on wednesday. we've got the tail end of a front line moving across central china coming up through the korean peninsula. and then on wednesday it's going to be pushing into japan. hokoriku could be one of the worst hit. this is rain falling on already saturated land. very unwelcome and bringing temperatures down. down towards the south there's a lot of heavy rain here really focusing its efforts on western portions of indochina around the bangkok area as well. just east of bangkok in fact. more than 350 millimeters of rain recorded in the last 24-hour period. this is some very, very heavy rain. it's been ongoing for the last several days. it's the southwest monsoon. you can see the hong kong areas also picking up significant rainfall in the next several days. all right, let's head onto your temperatures and see what's happening here. while those showers continuing on wednesday in hong kong, in manila with thunderstorms in bangkok and then we have this intense sunshine across chongqing as well as in

rachel. >> hi there. yes. actually, we have some visuals coming out.how you right now at 9:55 japan time. the storm is really starting to batter the island now. we've had gusts recorded 171 kilometers an hour, storm surge occurring as well. this is just the start of what is going to be a very tough weekend with soulik. here's our storm. it's going to be moving towards taiwan and making a landfall here during the overnight hours friday and into saturday. then a second landfall is expected in fujan province saturday afternoon. we are currently seeing sustained winds of 144 kilometers an hour with wind gusts at 216. there's been some marginal strengthening there. it is likely to produce not just storm surge and flooding from that also, but there's going to be a lot of rain coming off of this system. so up to 300 millimeters actually is seeing 200 on our model, but much of taiwan is likely to see about 300 millimeters of rain when all is said and done from this system. after making landfall in fujan province, you're going to see it's going to weaken down v
