rachel lang is a communications director for the recall bob filner effort. thanks for joining us today. right now, how many people are working on this effort and how many signatures do you have that 100,000 being the number? >> yeah. we have over 1,100 people signed up and -- to volunteer and circulating petitions all over the city. right now, all we know from what has been returned is we have well over 4,000 signatures, but we don't know because we have so many -- so many it's truly a grassroots effort so we have a lot of people out there circulating petitions and they are not back to us yet. >> if you only have 4,000 signatures i think what is needed is 2,600 per date to reach that date and you have to get there by september 26th. are you going to make it? >> absolutely. we are going to make it. we have 1,590 people willing and ready to sign this petition and know that based on the enthusiasm we saw on the first day. the challenge is getting the petition in front of them and getting the petitions back to headquarters. >> you heard what joe is telling us. t

and rachel lang, spokeswoman for the filner recall effort. all right. good to see both of you. rachel, you first. you call this recall effort an epic logistical feat but you say the biggest challenge is really making sure people have a chance to sign the petition. tell me what you're goidoing to make that happen. >> we have an army of volunteers of 1,100 people promising to take the petitions and circulate them among their friends and get them back to us. that's -- it's all voluntary effort right now. >> and so, april, how confident are you all at this point that you're going to get the kind of support that you want in order to have this mayor recalled? >> i'm confident that there are far more 101,000 people out there who would like to sign the petition. and our logistic problem is to get a piece of paper in front of them and then back from them but the support is absolutely there. it's almost unbelievable the number of people who want this to happen. >> and so, april, you signatures, then what? >> the signatures have to be turned in to the city clerk, verified. they determine w

rachel lang on the petition drive in order to get filner out, she says if it costs the money to do so it is still money well-spent. she's in san diego where all this is happening. very good to have you, rachel. thanks for joining us. so you're okay if the city ends up footing a good chunk of his legal bills to fight him? >> well, the problem is that this is costing us money every day he remains in office. that's why we launched this recall drive, to get him out of office because he wouldn't resign. if you consider all of the costs involved in having a city paralyze paralyzed, we have departments without heads and can't get new directors with our city in chaos. >> i'm sorry, i see where you're coming from. obviously he could use that as a wedge to keep himself in office. you didn't want that to be an excuse. is that a serious sticking point though? is that what's slowing this down? >> well, you know, i think emotionally it hate to think he did something wrong and we're going to pay for it. but we have to think pragmatically. this recall has been tremendously successful, unbelievably so
