radar gives you a range. and those officers who were familiar with fire control radars, the ses and the f these that were in use off guadalcanal, but we don't need to spot any more. we will just get the radar range. and we will just shoot. we don't have to shoot salvos anymore. fisher talked about partial salvos. well, what they often used off guadalcanal was not just a partial salvo. it was even more extreme. continuous fire. put as many shells in the air as you can. hit the target as rapidly as you can. and what this means, when you have got a ship like -- or helena that has 15 6 inch guns, each of which has a firing cycle between 6 and 10 seconds, but you really are firing continuously. and all the splashes from those shells here on the radar scope, and secure the target. this is why, particularly in the later battles, tessa for rhonda and some of the others, further up the chain in 1943, what typically happened is, the first japanese ship that presented the largest radar target gets overwhelmed. nine, the

doppler radar here it is. you can see we've actually got a little more precipitation on the radar than we did earlier in the day. in fact, we've got some light pockets moving in through half moon bay right now. parts of fremont as well. a lot of this is really going to kind of move rather slowly. it's a bit disorganized, which means you might get a period where you're like is it raining? and then it just stops. and that's what's going to happen. it's not going to be widespread or continuous. it might leave you a little confused at times, but that's why i'm here to guide you through that. but santa cruz right now we have an approaching line of showers right through there. also in san jose as well. we're going to continue to see this on and off. it's -- rainfall totals less than a tenth of an inch for most areas. nearly a quarter of an inch through tomorrow for the next few days for mainly the north bay. and then the winds might get a little breezier tonight into tomorrow. thunderstorms also an isolated chance.

jeff, what's on the radar right now? >> as we get a look at the radar, what you see is what looks like a major storm system hitting the bay area. this looks to be heavy widespread rainfall. i have a position where it's hitting the lower atmosphere where a lot of us live. as you fade that on you will notice a lot less in the way of rainfall touching the ground. we zoom and in get a closer look. you see across pleasanton and livermore, in the next 15 minutes. we are able to tweak the radar to give you a better view what's actually happening. no major heavy rainfall against hit and miss activity. this is one of many storm system this year, drought-free throughout all of california. the other thing besides rainfall that helped us become drought-free is snow pack. one of the most important snow pack measures, sierra, 165% normal across the sierra, excellent news. we'll talk more about when the storm hits coming up. >>> you can follow jeff on twitter if you want to track the rain. he just tweeted which days will get wet this w

>> well, first it happened right next to the radar, the columbus radar. you had a real clear really tight velocity to show the winds coming and a debris signature. i think the debris was up to 22,000 confirmed and definitely a tornado but until they do the survey, it's not official but no doubt about it. when you see it, you see things pushed in different directions. you see straight line winds kind of have a limitation, the damage they can do, you know? sometimes you'll see and awnings or windows blown out but when you see total destruction of homes and even some of the ones i've seen mobile homes, it's no doubt tornado damage. roofs missing and walls knocked out and buildings collapsed, that type of stuff and a straight path that goes along for several miles and it's pretty narrow. it's pretty easy to see it's a tornado. >> i know you're in front of the fire department and it has collapsed. is there any activity there? we are hoping first of all, that none of the firefighters were hurt, but also those firefighters are going to be needed today. >> yeah,
