we have two of the smart radars and the storm has another radar part here. we will take these anywhere we have the funding to do so. we have taken them to the east coast and the gulf coast, scan hurricanes when they make landfall, obviously to look at severe weather here in the central and southern lance. we have taken our radars to vancouver to scan snowfall during the olympics. we have also disassembled these radars and sent them across oceans to do a variety of different projects. we sent one of these radars to france to do a lightning and precipitation project. we also sent these to do tropical rainfall experiments. anywhere that we have funding, we will take these. they are not just locked to the ground here in the u.s. we will take them anywhere we have funding to do so. this is why our severe weather research chair is so good. radar technology was developed during the early days of world war ii. primarily in england, contributions from the united states, and the idea was to detect planes and went on to detect missiles later, but mostly to detect plane

storm ranger our mobile doppler radar. you can see this is the second round. it's our cold front sitting offshore. it's going to connect in with that atmospheric river. that's what would bring heavy rainfall continuing at least over the next three to six hours widespread coverage of rainfall right now. we'll take you into the top spots we're tracking. heavy rainfall developing now offshore. that would move into santa rosa just after midnight. off to the south, we've seen it pick up over san francisco. nonstop rainfall certainly into 11:30 tonight and after that, as well. it's been slow going here for parts of the peninsula and the south bay. showers starting to pick up. we'll see more showers in the downtown san jose just after midnight. keep your eyes on what's developing right now. off to the west, you can see a heavy zone of rainfall. this is headed right for the santa cruz mountains. we think this would be good enough to hold up into san jose and this is when you're going to see the rainfall pick up not only in san jose but also for morgan hill and gilroy.

i want to show you doppler radar. this gives you a good idea in terms of the system, where it's located and the time line. here it is. you can see we're still seeing that good plume of subtropical moisture, moving far off to the north. we'll start to see that hour-by-hour outlook moving north to south late near this morning. you can see it developing just off the coast there. now if i give you a rundown of what we can expect by 9:00 a.m. we'll see an increase in cloud cover, an area north of the golden gate bridge we'll start to see some showers earlier on. by about 12:00 temperatures remain mild and muggy. remember, this is the warmer storm so it will feel very humid out there. overall that gives you an idea of what we're tracking. now we want to take a look at the roads. tomorrow the wet roads will make an impact on what we can expect. chp isn't reporting any major accidents and not a lot of folks out on the roads which is great news. you'll want to take time, the golden gate bridge is dry. a lot of fog out there. s

we continue to see heavy rain on the doppler radar. its been heaviest near the coast and in the north bay with some mountains seeing over 4 inches of rain already. on the satellite you can see the low presure off the coast. that will head our way and bring intense rain to the bay area tonight and early tomorrow morning. it should become partly cloudy and mostly dry by tomorrow afternoon. dry weather will continue through monday with a chance of showers on tuesday and wednesday. more rain is possible next weekend. we're still seeing snow on the radar. keep in mind, that winter weather advisory in place through tomorrow morning. it's going to be the toughest. overnight and into tomorrow, not the best driving conditions. a day break because we are expecting also a drop in temperatures. now, back here at home, we're in the 50s right now. it's not too bad. we've seen the milder temperatures as we've been waking up the past couple of days. 53 degrees right now for san jose. now, we get that cold front that's swept in and brought some light to moderate showers, and now we can see that we're still seeing plenty of stability out there. you can see some thunderstorms developing just off of the pacific. keep in mind that even though that rain that we saw earlier, that line of showers is now off in the monterey area off to the east and south. right off to the pacific, it's the same cold front. this is just behind the cold front. we're going to expect to see a couple of more showers and more rain to the bay area through tomorrow with the chanc

this was a quick burst last night with mill valley picking up .04, santa rosa .1 and right now on the radar and satellite we are closing in on the sierra and look at the coverage showing up with chain control in place on interstate 80 and 50. there is a little bit of green just offshore and to the north there is a chance we could have an isolated shower later this morning into the earlier afternoon. the highest chance would be in the north bay of santa rosa and sonoma as well as napa county. so watch out for that. currently 30s and 40s so you want to bundle up with the cooler air mass settling in and temperatures are partly cloudy skies with the upper 50s. partly cloudy skies and gusty wind. the plan for today is lower 40s to the lower 50s by 8:00 and then for the afternoon upper 50s to lower 60s. here is the cloud coverage with a chance of a shower later this afternoon. we will talk more about that coming up. now let's check in with sal updating the roadways. i have that memory of running into sal during a good ski day in tahoe. >> that is right, you were a snowboarder and i was skiing. ma
