raf sanchez is with us now from tel aviv. raf, let's talk about these attacks going on.resident biden saying he hasn't lost hope on the hostage negotiations. the big question is, how many hostages are still alive? where are they? what does hamas say about it? >> reporter: jose, a senior hamas official saying that the group doesn't know how many of those roughly 120 hostages still in gaza are alive. they say they are spread out throughout the strip. they are being held by different groups of hamas fighters. hamas simply can't tell you at this point how many are living and how many are dead. the israeli government says that of the 120, roughly 40 are confirmed to be dead. israeli officials suspect that the real number is significantly higher than that. in terms of these cease-fire talks, exactly two weeks ago, you remember president biden stood in the white house, he laid out that three-phase plan to end the war in gaza, to free all of the hostages. tuesday of this week, hamas responded to that proposal with a series of changes. secretary blinken said some were acceptable,

joining us now, raf sanchez in tel aviv. let's start with you. why did the israeli prime minister dissolve the war cabinet and what does it mean? >> reporter: primarily because those centrist opposition figures who joined his government a week after the october 7th attack in a show of national unity have now walked out of the government. they left with a pretty stinging rebuke of prime minister netanyahu, accusing him of playing politics with the war. saying that he has no plan for the future of gaza after hamas. and so prime minister netanyahu says look, the war cabinet was created to accommodate these opposition figures joining the governments on an emergency basis and with them gone, there is no need for the war cabinet to exist. we are expecting the decision making will be centralized going forward in prime minister netanyahu and the israeli defense minister who is a relative moderate, but it is interesting that he is not inviting those far right members of his cabinet to join the war cabinet. instead, he's keeping them on the outside. that m

nbc's raf sanchez joins us in tel aviv. ials are telling you what the president announced here wasn't exactly what they agreed to. if they don't agree to these terms, what does it mean for reaching a deal? >> reporter: ana, the future of this cease-fire proposal looking very, very uncertain. just 72 hours after president biden speaking at the white house laid out what he says was a proposal that israel had already agreed to. today we're hearing from prime minister benjamin netanyahu speaking in front of an israeli parliamentary committee, he is saying israel has not agreed to end the war until hamas is destroyed. he says president biden left out parts of that proposal. now, the context here is prime minister netanyahu is under intense pressure from the far right of his own coalition who are saying that they will topple his government if he goes ahead with the deal as outlined by president biden earlier. the prime minister also under a lot of pressure from the united states, from the families of hostages to go forward with th

nbc's raf sanchez is with us today from tel aviv with the very latest. for being with us. what more do we know about this shake-up? >> well, jose, for the last eight months, the israeli war cabinet has been managing not just the war effort, but most of the major decisions inside of this country, and you'll remember, jose, it was something of a team of rivals. prime minister benjamin netanyahu's political opponents from the center grounds agreed to join the israeli government one week after the october 7th attack in a sort of sign of recognition of the national emergency that israel was facing, but last week those centrists led by benny gantz resigned from the israeli government with some pretty harsh words for the prime minister saying that he was playing politics with the war, that he was failing to plan for the future of gaza and so today, prime minister netanyahu is dissolving the war cabinet saying it was only ever a temporary body designed to create the space for those political rivals to work together. what is notable, jose, is that he has decided t

nbc's raf sanchez joins us now from tel aviv, and nbc's keir simmons is in beirut. ael is saying about this battle along their northern border. >> so, ana, this weapon is called a trebuchet, it left the battlefield in the 16th century, hasn't really been seen since then. and all of a sudden it pops up on the israeli border. you are seeing troops hurling fire balls over the border into lebanon. an israeli military official tells me this is not an officially sanctioned weapon. it appears to have been built by reservists who were stationed up there. while this is not part of the i df's arsenal, they were trying to burn away thick bushes, thick shrubbery on that border, which they say hezbollah fighters sometimes use to hide in, but in terms of the broader and really much more serious situation, the israeli government says that what is going on right now is intolerable and it cannot continue. you have about 70,000 israeli civilians displaced from their homes since october because of the fighting. you have near daily rocket fire, some of those rockets causing quite large

we have raf sanchez on the ground in jerusalem along with our chief white house correspondent peter alexander tracking the president's movements in paris. raf, start us off. what more do we know about this incident at that embassy? >> reporter: so ana, this is a developing situation. here's what we know, around 8:30 a.m. local time, gunfire erupted at the entrance to the u.s. embassy in beirut. lebanese media is saying the shooting lasted around 30 minutes. jake sullivan telling nbc news all american staff are safe and accounted for, but he did say that a local lebanese security guard was wounded, being treated in hospital. we believe those injuries are nonlife-threatening. now, lebanese troops were stationed nearby. they shot and wounded a gunman taking him into custody. they are saying he is a syrian national. it is not clear at this point whether he acted alone, whether there are potentially more shooters still out there. the image you're seeing on your screen is of a gunman outside of the embassy, lebanese authorities have not confirmed that that is the man who was taken into custody by l

joining us now from tel aviv is nbc's raf sanchez. what's going on here?reporter: so, ana, this is the latest example of frustration between the biden administration and the government of israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. here's what happens. yesterday seemingly out of nowhere the israeli prime minister released a video in english, accusing the biden administration of withholding weapons that israel needs for fighting this war in gaza, and in unusually blunt terms, the white house press secretary saying the administration frankly has no idea what the israeli prime minister is talking about. the reality, according to the white house, is that the administration has put on hold a single shipment of 2,000 pound bombs, those very, very heavy weapons that have caused such large civilian casualties in other parts of gaza, but the white house says all the other weapons that israel needs including those crucial interceptors to protect from incoming hezbollah rockets are heading to israel, as they have been for the last eight months since october 7th. >> ra
