firefighters battling an early- morning fire in san rafael. we understand flames have spread to two homes. anne makovec is there and she joins us on the phone with the latest details. anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. still some smoke in the air here on maywood way in san rafael. but everybody has made it out of the homes. two homes involved. one significantly damaged. and one that has some wall damage and then the fire spread to the attic. the people that were living in that homemade it out just fine. and there were no people living in the first house where the fire started. the fire appeared to have started in the garage of a three-level house, it was a garage where there might have been some construction going on according to the fire department. somebody recently had bought that house but nobody was living in it. so the fire spread through the house, hit the wall of the next door house and then went into the attic. the smoke remaining, firefighters have to make sure there is no fire hiding in the attic that could erupt later.

jade hernandez joins us from san rafael. she just spoke to a fire chief. >> reporter: the battalion chief told us it could be seen from 580 when it broke out. it involved two homes this morning. th fire began shortly after 3:00. flames ignited inside of a vacant home and quickly spread next door. the second home had a couple inside. the man and woman were able to get out safely, though. san rafael firefighters were able to put out flames in less than an hour. pg&e shut off power to both homes. we have been told by the fire chief this morning that the fire started in the garage of the first trilevel home and quickly spread next door. renovations were being done on that home. the fire is not suspicious in behavior. firefighters is assessing damage to the second home where a man and woman became alerted to flames. >>> the couple noticed the fire next door. it did not extend into the fire next door yet. >> reporter: no one was hurt in this fire and fire investigate evers will still have -- and fire investigators will still have

to bring in more news foster we turn to jackie says alive in san rafael. >> san rafael fire crews are in mop up stage of here. on may would way, this fire started at 3:00 a.m.. when firefighters got here they quickly changed it to a three alarm fire, because the second house was involved in the fire. where the fire started that was a vacant home that was under construction. obviously that will be part of the investigation whether not that construction was part of the ignition source. the quiet fire quickly spread to the house next door. to people were inside that house they were able to get out without injury. firefighters say it took 30 minutes to get the fire under control. this fire burned for an hour and a half- two hours. this was short shot after 4:00 a.m. they continue to put water on the fire. they will remain out here for good portion of the day. obviously this is going to be a investigation underway to determine what started it. the good news no injuries to firefighters or occupants of the house. >> thank you for the update. >> investigators are looking at a shooting that le

all these roads are very windy in san rafael around maywood way.that is one of the challenges that firefighters had this morning. but here are the pictures that we took at around 3 a.m. when the fire broke out. it started in one house in the garage. that house had nobody living in it at the time. that was the good news. maybe some construction had been going on in the area though according to firefighters. that's all going to be part of the investigation. the fire started there. quickly spread to the home next door. and that is where two people did live. they heard a bunch of crackling from some of the power lines outside, and that is what woke them up and they managed to get out and no injuries to those people. also no injuries to firefighters this morning. they were able to get that fire out pretty quickly once they got on scene. but again, significant damage to the house where it started and some pretty serious damage to the other house. we are looking at damage to the kitchen as well as the attic so the people who live there can't live there an

we received an update from the san rafael fire chief. he told us that fire investigators are now on scene this morning the. we want to show you the pictures of the two homes that caught fire overnight. fire investigators we know are cole through the damage of the garage of the home on maywood way. the property was recently purchased and the new owner was renovating the property. the fire broke out at 3:00 a.m. and spread from the garage of that home quickly to the home right next door at 33 maywood way. the couple inside of 33 maywood way know noticed the flames and c alled 911. dispatch had already been n otified. pg&e show shut off power to both homes. no other homes were affected. the battalion chief spoke to us early had morning -- early this morning. >> this is on top of the hill, on top of the ridge. so we encourage all people, all residents, to have smoke detectors. i'm not sure if the smoke detectors alerted the residents in the next-door house. >> reporter: the american red cross is assisting the couple without a place to stay t
