and rafael casal, poet and oakland native. thank you both for joining me. start with why are you focusing on this story now? >> the truth of the matter is we've been focusing on this story for the last ten years. it took us a decade to get this film made. and oftentimes we say we wish it felt like a period piece, that a lot of the things in it, it would be great if we could look at shootings like that and say oh, man, 2009 was rough. you know. but we just saw the numbers. right? these are things that keep happening. >> police shootings are such a dividing line in our politics. and for people who thought there was progress going into donald trump's electoral college victory, he obviously activated a lot of people who want pushback. >> i've done that as united states attorney. to prosecute police officers who do wrong. but we need so far as we can in my view to help police departments get better, not diminish their effectiveness. and i'm afraid we've done some of that. so we're going to try to pull back on this. and i don't think it's wrong or mean or insensi

f ah, i mean -- me and one my best friends, rafael casal have been working on this film for 10 yearsrte aovie [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: it's not easy to write a movie. >> yeah. were doing at all?know what you >> oh, back -- >> jimmy: when you were writing -- were you writing a screenplay >> yeah. well we -- really, it all started because we've had the same producers for 10 years,ei jess and calder. and they actually asked us to write a movie. reallythey asked rafael. they found him he's a very accomplished poet. found some of his poems on youtube. >> jimmy: wow. >> and said, "do you think any of this kind of language would translate to film?ai he "i think so also, i have this friend who's gonna write it with me." and that was -- and then we started trying to figure out what this lm was and we knew at the time -- >> jimmy: did they know who you were i was nobody [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: right. >> they didn't eventually i did a performance for them and they sort of, they -- you know >> jmy: yeah >> they were like, "oh, he's all right too. >> jimmy: yeahen ou're -- >> yeah. >> jimm

. >> bravo to you and rafael casal. you've been friends since high school.st, you know, really with the impetus of trying to show off oakland, california, on screen. we felt we had never seen the city represents in a way we know it to be. we were trying to tell an oakland story. when you do that, there are a lot of other issues. >> it started with a police shooting. >> it does. conceiving the product was around 2009 after oscar grant was injured. the discussion at that time was around police shootings and oscar's nation was on on everything incident. almost no one is affected by the tragedy except colin because he happens to be there to witness it. >> i want to get back to oakland. there's this device you use about probation. >> mm-hmm. >> there's a way in which the viewer -- i i may have this totally wrong. you feel the tension. were you trying to replicate the tension of what it's like to be a young black man walking on the streets with cops look after you? >> there's a moment in the film where almost everyone sits in his shoes. it's a cultural difference
