our correspondent spent the day at the rafah crossing.eporting from inside gaza is extremely difficult, but he was able to send us this report. he explains that while hundreds of people had gathered at that crossing, just a small proportion of them were actually allowed to cross. >> i saw family with bags and they were waiting. out of the 545 on the list, 345 people left. so, 200 were not able to make it. they publish the list again tonight, and they sa they will resume the opening of the crossing tomorrow and allow those 200 people. they might issue another short li for people because today was the first day. it was chaotic in the morning, but manageable. we have not seen any sort of fighting between the people. people came and suddenly realized it is not open for everybody, just people who are on the list, and the list was sent by the egyptians. they put it on the wall and everyone could find his name, and people on the crossing will check passports and make sure they are -- the name matches the list. i was spending all day talking to p

they are not going to get out through the rafah crossing. saw how difficult it was to get ten americans out. the egyptians are not going to allow it. the palestinians would be very wary of leaving gaza because they would think they would become permanently displaced. when you look at the kind of military operation that israel is setting up, surrounding parts of gaza with ground forces while continuing these bombardments, it's very difficult to see how a full-scale intervention on the ground in gaza, coupled with the air strikes, doesn't continue to have enormous civilian casualties, which will raise tensions in the west bank, with other arab governments and make it harder for israel to sustain support from the world's democracies. it's hard to get the hostages out, presuming they are in the war zone. i think efforts to try to negotiate the lease of the hostages, while a more targeted campaign against hamas, a more sustained effort to get humanitarian aid in, which requires pauses. that's the kind of approach the u.s. is probably pressing. it

>> reporter: wolf, we've seen dozens of aid trucks make it from egypt across the rafah crossing into gaza today. the last that we heard was that at least 100 trucks had made it through. but a warning here, that is just talks that have come from across border into gaza and being distributed because once they go past egypt, they go through an israeli checkpoint where they have reverified and then allowed back up into gaza where they are unloaded and reloaded into trucks and run by humanitarian agencies selling them across the gaza strip and today we have confirmation from the res crescent that at least another 100 trucks have made it to gaza. yesterday this deal was delayed for hours claiming there was not enough trucks. one of the trucks made it into northern gaza and bringing relief supplies and food and water and bringing other essential first aid materials for people needed in northern g gaza that's been badly hit by bombardment. we have confirmation that the hostages have been handed over to the red cross. we're watching that rafah border crossing and at same time this could only

>> reporter: in rafah you mean?o, what happens is basically the red cross is the go-between between -- right, the red cross is the go-between between hamas and the idf. hamas hands the hostages to the red cross. the red cross crosses the border with them. hands them to the idea. the idf has an operational command center on the egypt side. yesterday in involved helicopters that flew the hostages into bitterly territory to get medical treatment. it is during that treatment that we actually see who these hostages are. we get to learn who their families are. the important note is we also get to see, who is missing? who has been left behind? when i was in tel aviv earlier this week i was speaking to multiple families of israeli hostages who are fairly certain that their loved ones are not going to be released because, for example, they are adult males. even that doesn't tell you the whole story. there will be, even after today, there will be more children left behind. more women left behind. these families are in an agon
