time, 47 sick and injured children, many of whom are fighting cancer, left gaza for egypt via the rafah medical complex, it is the first time in eight months when israel seized it that anyone children, elderly, sick, wounded or otherwise was allowed to leave through rafah. and while 47 is of course better than zero, it is a tiny fraction of the 2500 children that the united nations now says are at risk of dying if not evacuated immediately. that dire warning came immediately after a meeting that the un secretary general, antonio guterres, had, along with other top un officials, with a panel of american doctors who have volunteered in gaza during the war. joining me now is one of those doctors, aisha khan. she was in gaza from the end of november until january 1st. she's also an emergency physician at stanford university. doctor khan, it's great to have you on the show. nice to see you in person. i know we've spoken before, but you know, a couple of children or a couple of dozen of children out of the 2500, certainly not enough. you were in gaza as of a month ago. describe for us the sit

we understand some of those families are already waiting at the rafah border crossing at the european hospital. that's where these palestinians who have been held are expected to first arrive for treatment and assessment before being released into gaza. you also have more than 45 who are going to be released into the occupied west bank, and then seven who are going to be expelled to egypt. and when you break down the details of this, you begin to understand just how complicated these logistics all are. so all of these steps still need to take place before we get to that palestinian prisoner release. if it happens on time. for now, of course, i see those live images in front of ofer prison in the west bank. for now, the red cross vehicles and the red cross workers will be preparing for those steps to take place. now. in the past, israel has not allowed families to gather outside this prison in the west bank for security reasons, it says. but that has happened regardless. and these releases have in the past included minors, included mothers who were arrested while they were breastfeedin
