cnn's rahel solomon has more. >> victor and amara, good morning. this is going to come down to time, how costly this is will hinge on how long this strike continues. if it is an extended strike, analysts warn the economic costs will add up. one estimate is the strike could cost the company $5 billion if it lasts ten days. one thing to consider with that estimate, that would have been a full strike of the uaw, 145,000 workers. at this point about a tenth of that figure is actually striking. keep that in mind. that estimate includes things like lost pay, losses to manufacturers, wu also suppliers. the other thing, mark zan city, chief economist of moodys said a full strike lasting six weeks would be the equivalent of shaving 0.2% from the gdp. he says that's modest, but it's meaningful when you think of the other economic headwinds we're experiencing, student loan repayments, rising oil prices. guys, if it feels like there's been more strikes than usual, yeah, it's not just your imagination. what's behind the increased strike activity here in the u.s

rahel solomon is here to break it down. what are they hoping to achieve here? >> well more money.hat is the big thing. there are other demands which you just mentioned. one that we hear a lot about is the 32-hour, four day workweek. and i could tell you based on conversations today with different industry analysts, that that is not expected. there is a lot of confidence that that issue is going to make it across the finish line. but the issue of the 40% pay raise, that is is a huge issue. now, for the automakers, they say, look, we could offer -- ford and gm could offer a 20% raise and stellantis is offering 17.5%. but again the uaw asking for 40% over four years and just to provide a bit of a snapshot of where we're starting from, on average, the average uaw worker at one of the big three plants is making about $32.32 per hour but that depends on the type of workers. if you are part-time, or temporary, that could be close to $15 to $18 per hour. and pay a big issue here. but it is not just the pay of the workers that we're hearing about. it is the pay of the executives as you jus

i'm rahel solomon alongside kate bolduan and boris sanchez this morning and "cnn news central" startsight now. ♪ >>> the latest jobs report has just crossed and here is what the report shows on the surface, 187,000 jobs were added last month, the unemployment rate ticked up to 3.8%, but there is so much more in there than just that. cnn's vanessa yurkevich has the details for us. what do you see inside these top line numbers? >> this is a good report, a little bit above expectations but still a comfortable number both on the jobs added and the unemployment rate ticking up to 3.8% but still in a comfortable range. when we dig in here is where jobs were added. gains in hospitality, gains in leisure and hospitality and gains in construction. these are areas that have added jobs in the month of august. now, losses, places we saw losses are in areas that maybe you would expect because of what you're hearing in the news a little bit. losses in trucking, 37,000 jobs lost, that is because yellow trucking corporation filed for bankruptcy, laid off 30,000 people, you're seeing that reflected ri
