in the first meeting that rahm had -- we call him rahm, it is kind of silly.th care and will -- with karen lewis, he's a 20% of the school kids can't be saved. she was shocked. she decided this guy was a malevolent force for schools in chicago. she was vindicated in that judgment. the first thing he did in announcing was going to try and extend the school day, which everyone supported, was announced that he was not one to pay the teachers anymore for extending their workday. and took away and already negotiated 70% -- 7% pay increase. of course, they went on strike and careless in the chicago teachers in a great show of people power chicagoans all remember the vision of thousands of chicago teachers in their red t-shirts at the auditory and theater and then marching the streets, they humiliated him. they beat him in a strike that he went down to springfield to rid the laws to prevent dust basically, helped pass a law saying a strike could not happen unless they had 75% of the membership voting for it. well, they had about 98% of the membership voting for the s

it would be a wake-up call for rahm emanuel.ark: people keep saying wake-up call but the fact is he knew it was far better to avoid a runoff and he pulled out the stops. he was not complacent, he brought up president obama, his allies went after the guy he is in the runoff with. i'm am not sure there are more stops to pull out and there is a danger if he pulls out too much, there could be a backlash. >> john: i guess that is the point. going negative is really dangerous. mark: he tried to get turnout up yesterday and did not do it. john: he will have to do it better than he did in this one. it will be fascinating to watch that race. a couple years ago you would have thought he was impregnable and there was no way he would end up in the situation. this could be an actual real race. mark: watch to see if any of the prominent african-american entertainers represented by his brother end up in chicago to endorse rahm emanuel. john: i will watch that. i bet it will happen. our garden state correspondent and the talk of the town hall,

rahm emanuel could use the boost. chicago tribune poll shows rahm emanuel sitting at 45%.top challenger and my next guest comes in with a 20% rating of support. 15% of voters are still undecided. he needs to avoid the runoff election with the second place finisher. garcia wants to go one-on-one with what they call mayor 1% in chicago. obviously, those are not emanuel supporters. garcia has the backing of a number of labor and progressive groups who are tired of what they call his corp. rad friendly leadership. bars ya has pitched himself as a mayor for all of us. his most enthusiastic supporter from the chicago teachers union. he angered voters with his decision to close 50 public schools. most in nirnt neighborhoods on the south and west side of chicago. some feel he was picking and choosing neighborhoods. which alienated minority voters. now sits at 42% with black residents who make up a third of the city's population. the 25% of undecided black voters will play a key role in deciding if rahm e man kbrul avoids a runoff or wins the race. this race comes down to turnout.
