joining me now, reverend jesse jackson, chairman of the rainbow push coalition.g this conversation because i know you're behind this. what is your reaction, first of all, to the report and the proposals being considered. are you on board with all of them? >> yes, the president should be congratulated. this is bold leadership in the right direction. remind you, he is not talking about gun control. he's talking about assault weapons control. a gun for your house, you got it. gun for hunting, you got it. these assault weapons threaten national security. they invite the view of homeland security. you can literally destroy railroads and bring down airplanes. there's no purpose for these assault weapons except to kill people and infrastructure. >> lawmakers really blasted the purported plans today. first republican congressman richard hudson. then north dakota democratic senator heidi heidkamp. here they are. >> i'm not a big believer that this is a one size fits all. what can you actually get passed? what can you actually get done that's going to make schools and comm

joining me in the studio, reverend jesse jackson, founder of the rainbow push coalition. pleasure. >> thank you. >> thank you for being here. let's talk about dr. king and the perspective of what i said, 45 years since his death, but we have an african-american president for the second time taking office. give me your thautsds on that. >> there's immense pride in that. the fact is, for 244 years we were in slavery, the emancipation proclamation, jim crow, only free since 1966, from selma, alabama, really, to washington is quite a journey. the steps that he'll take the oath of office was built by ancestors who were enslaved, about 170 miles from jamestown, first landed in 1609. a lot ofs h s hahistory and loo across at the dr. king statue and lincoln memorial. the emancipation. a lot of stuff going down. i think dr. king, planning a poor people's campaign. beyond the issue of slavery, and segregation and the right to vote is access to a job, and so while we fought these big fights on fiscal cliff and debt ceiling, poverty is expanding. 50 million in poverty. food insecure,

i'm joined tonight by reverend jesse jackson, president of the rainbow-push coalition.everend, good to have you with us tonight. >> jefferson davis democrats were doing their thing as republican conservatives to deny access to voting. >> well, what do you say to mr. blackwell that says african-american organizers caused those long lines? >> well, i was in ohio during that period. we had wet people and dry machines. we had machines locked up in the warehouse dry. people stood in the rain seven hours that day to vote. so you cannot blame people for doing what they ought to do, vote. you can blame those that held the machines back for holding the machines back. >> would changing the electoral college votes hurt african-american and latino voters? >> ultimately it would hurt everybody, we're so inextricably bound. those who once sought to deny the right to vote now seek to suppress the right to vote. they tried all kinds of maneuvers in 2011 and '12 from trying to stop early voting, from trying to demand there be a birth certificate. and florida and pennsylvania and ohio an
