i'm raj mathai. >> i'm jessica augeri. the gunman walked around the security check point. that's what sources are telling us about the gunman that kill ld three workers at the ups facility. skipping the metal detector was common for arriving workers. >> reporter: the metal detectors were not routinely used to screen employees coming in, just those going out. just why that's the practice is not clear but authorities reviewed security video that reportedly shows how gunman jimmy lam was simply able to walk past the check point on the morning of june 14th and shows workers by passing with the security guard looking on. minutes later at a morning briefing, lam opened fire with a ma mac 10 assault pistol. he killed three co-workers before turning the gun on himself when tactical officers confronted him. authorities tell us the metal detectors were installed following another attack in 2014. that attack left three dead. ups officials are not commenting siting the on going police

i'm raj mathai. >> and i'm jessica aguirre. he had the credentials, only they were fake. his nursing career ended by a sting at a south bay hospital. the man from the los angeles area arrested for impersonating a nurse. ian, they got him just in time, as well. >> reporter: yeah, jessica, the man claimed he was a registered nurse. he showed them nursing credentials. but when he tried to work here in gilroy, that's when detectives knew something wasn't quite right. investigators say jeremy daniel griffin qtried to get work through a traveling nursing company. but as the company did his background check, his information, and nurse license number didn't match up. >> it's very disturbing that somebody could get that far with just using somebody else's license number. >> reporter: the state consumer affairs department was contacted. they say it was stolen identity. the hospital said they helped detective when griffin came into work his first day. >> he never went into patient care areas, but we started him in computer training so the investigator could come in. >> reporter: at

i'm janelle wang sitting in for raj and jessica. what was a vandal up to no good? has the big question tonight in south san francisco after someone climbed onto a water storage tank and attempted to pry open a top hatch. nbc is live in south city at a bottle watered distribution center. people there aren't taking any chances. >> reporter: janelle, authorities are not really sure if those vandals were actually able to get into the tank. they have run preliminary tests. so far they haven't found anything dangerous in the water. but you can see there is a stack of bottled water there beyond this chain-link fence. that's for residence who have been told just to be on the safe side, don't drink the tap water. most house holds in the sunshine gardens area got one or two cases of water for the light. >> hopefully that will last me. hopefully this will be taken care of tomorrow. >> got a e-mail saying don't drink the water. i came out and got a case as soon as i got off of work. >> reporter: flyers from distributed on residents' doors warning about the drinking water. this
