sir walter raleigh, you know sir walter raleigh one of america's earliest explorers, he said this. i like this a lot. for who so ever commands the sea, he said commands the trade. and whosoever commands the trade of the world commands the riches of the world, and consequently the world itself. i'm sure that raleigh couldn't have fathomed the impact of planes or railroads, much less ecommerce. but the fact remains, even centuries after he spoke those memorable words, there remains a powerful link between america's oceans, rivers, lakes and coast and america's economy. so consider this, more than half of americans live in coastal watershed counties. that's true even though this area makes up only 17% of our u.s. land area. and those counties support about 66 million jobs. so it's along the coastal areas. and so now, more than ever, we need to ensure that the blue economy is strong and growing. this morning i'll touch on three ways we can do that. so, first, we simply need to show off america's waters. i grew up in portland, oregon, and as a boy, i remember going with my father and my

the movement spread to raleigh, it spread to durham. i'm particularly very much aware of raleigh, because one of the schools that was the earliest participant in these demonstrations was saint august cities college. that's my old college. i wasn't there. i was still in brownsville at the time. i was young. but essentially, students were my campus from that campus participated in protests. students at the university participated in protests. and then much to the surprise of a lot of folks, students from duke university joined in the protest. now all of a sudden there are integrated groups who are sitting in. and they are breaking down this wall of segregation in the cities across north carolina. the protest spread across almost every town, every city in north carolina. they had colleges, they had black colleges, at least, and by the end of february -- remember, the first demonstration was february 1st. by the end of february -- february 28th -- that was a leap year. february 29th. by february 29th, every major city in north carolina had

it still 103 at reagan national, 103 raleigh. cooler, but warmth and humorid in the midwest. the heat index, we are now 109. further west, behind the big storms that is where things are cooling off. we are back to 100 degrees tomorrow, close to that on sunday. excessive heat warning all the way into parts of south carolina until 9:00 tonight more in the ohio and tennessee valley. the excessive heat watch is expected tomorrow. i have used the term with the storms, a term that is used to describe a line just like this, which extend several hundred miles, moving at high speed. it is moving at 60 m.p.h., 65, and ahead of that, this large area of severe thunderstorm watch. these orange areas are severe thunderstorms warnings. at the storm prediction center any minute now it will take this watch and push it all the way over to the chesapeake bay. the entire viewing area is under a severe thunderstorm watch. based on the timing, it will probably be somewhere around 9:00 11:00 when the storms will rapidly from west to east. i ask where it is damaging wind, a tremendous amount of ligh

new york at 82 degrees and 88 to the south at raleigh and 89 in richmond. that warm air continuing to filter to the mid-atlantic. in terms of national temperatures, can you see the hot air still settlingry where. we have some triple digit highs here to the west. pretty warm weather across the board. just areas into the far northeast into new england seeing some cooler, cooler conditions. a little bit of rain to the far south that's kind of moved its way off the shore now, off the eastern shore. other than that, we're going to see pretty clear skies as we head into the course of tonight. we are looking at a ridge of high pressure that's going to scoot its way out. we have a cold front that's going to move it way through. we could see a chance late in the day in the late afternoon on sunday of an isolated storm or two. very scattered in nature. monday looks like the day where most of the action will be happening as that frontal system will pass. behind that front, another ridge of high pressure builds in and into mid-week, we're going to be back into warm hot
