the city of raleigh is doing a switchover, a shift change. they have 80 people, 26 trucks coming off the roads very quickly and making a switch out. new crews will be on from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. earlier today when we were out at the salt barn, they only dropped salt because they don't they just have salt. they tell me that just today since 6:00 a.m. they have dropped 600 tons of salt all along raleigh city streets. right now they have put out salt on the priority one roads, glenwood, new bern, capital boulevard, all inside the beltline. they've got about halfway done of that priority one of the plowing part, when the new crews come out at 6:00 p.m. they will finish crawling through there, putting the salt down. then they will go to the priority 2 routes, the bus routes. it starts again at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, and priority 3, those are your big neighborhood streets. people, just stay inside tonight. it is icy out here. >> thanks, anna laurel. outside our downtown raleigh about 50,000 people without power across our viewing area righ

the roads in raleigh looked pretty decent right now at least the main ones. but they are not clear by a long shot. the city of raleigh has the public corkscrew out with 1100 road miles they have to clear so we have two dozen trucks out there clearing these roads. but there is still a lot of slash and slippery areas you depicting people are concerned about now in raleigh is ice. we have seen a lot of the tree leaves start to glaze over and of course a coating of thin ice we are seeing starting to form on some of the limbs. comes to power lines if they snap and fall on those lines. that is a big concern for a lot of older assemblage tree-lined neighborhoods like historic oakwood. but i think we have found that most people are just trying to make the most of this situation today. and again, the roads seem to be in pretty good shape right now. but as amended talked about, they can be deceiving. i saw a couple of folks really run their engines coming around a quarter and the hit the pile of slash and those wheels were spinning. so you really have to be careful. >> julia sims reporting live in downtown raleigh.
